Default Does the Military Make the Man or Does the Man Make the Military?

ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2012) — "Be all you can be," the Army tells potential recruits. The military promises personal reinvention. But does it deliver? A new study, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that personality does change a little after military service -- German conscripts come out of the military less agreeable than their peers who chose civilian service.

I was in the Marines. It allowed me to fully actualize my capacity to be stubborn. It is called resolve...

    Agreeableness? WTF?

The Marines also allowed me to express my capacity for "bearing" - the capacity to be mature when recieving criticism, aka not being a crybaby.

How many German "soldaten" are poised, mature and reflective when being criticized? How many of them will prosper because of this?

Correction: Men make the Marine, and the Marine makes more Marines.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

hell yeah. I believe it was the military that made my father a bitter person... though it also helped him in many other aspects.

Finland still has outdated sexist conscription model. To all those who don't know; men have to either go to twelve months of civil service or to the army for 6 to 12 months.

Where I come from (I'm not talking about Finland in general, but my own circles) you prove to be a man by going to the compulsory test before these two options and proving that you're too fucked up to serve in the military. Then you get "C papers" which means that you're released from the service during peace. If you're real hardcore, you can go for the "D papers" meaning that they won't let you serve even if it were wartime.
If you want to gain extra kudos, you get "A papers" and then announce yourself as conscieous objector and go to the prison for 6 months.

I'm planning on reverting my C papers to A papers and then going to prison as I had intended in the first place before I too honestly told about my mental history and drug use.

I don't know what the fuck Maketh the the Man, but it certainly isn't the government.

We had a similar system here. I even had to go to the medical examination after I was considered to be able for service with minor limitations. However, because all this stuff is pretty expensive, they just dropped the conscription part and we're now kindly asked if we wanted to serve in the armed forces (which I kindly refused).

Military isn't totally worthless I guess, though still a waste of time.

Does the hypothetical question make a man think, or does the man think of a hypothetical question?

I'm very curious how you think the military is a waste of time. Please, enlighten me.

Whoever wrote that needs to get with the times. The Army has discontinued use of "Be All You Can Be" over 10 years ago in favor of "Army of One."

So, clearly, Rambo makes the military as far as the Army is concerned.
