    Default Smartphone Audio

    (mis-oost...sup fellow head-fiers )

Hadn't seen much talk about smartphones as an audio source. I use two, a rooted Inspire 4g with Cyanogen Mod 7, and a stock Sensation 4g. IME the Inspire has a legitimate sound card, but the Sensation falls short; I don't know much about mobile sources and I was curious to see if anyone knew much about the sound cards in cell phones, if rooting/running an alternate operating system could affect sq, etc.

But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

Whats the primary purpose you want the sound quality to fulfill? Listening to music...both device should be fine, and upgrading to a line out device for your stereo, and/or a nicer pair of headphones/speakers will make a MUCH bigger difference that the sound quality between the two devices. As for recording it should be quite obvious you need a real mic and external power to bypass the phones shortcomings. Besides portable music I would suggest its only decent for recording spoken word for interviews and such. If you are referencing some hack or something to make it a sound card for your computer, leave a link.

I think Cyanogen has some audio improvements vs the stock android and the inspire could have better speakers. As far as the sound card in most mobile phones, what many phone companies usually do is buy a entire platform which contains the cpu, graphics, audio/etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_OMAP Like Ti OMAP or Qualcomm snapdragon. This is like a entire system on a board that includes all the computational parts. Most of the audio is done in software.

I think the Inspire and Sensation both have Dolby SRS and active noise cancellation. There could be a difference to the two phones in speakers.

Cyanogen offers a lot of audio enhancements such as DSP equalizer and FLAC support, there may just be a few things turned on to make thing sound better in the mod. I know on my Cyanogen equipped Nook Color the sound quality is better.

    thanks tho lol

I know the DSP eq on CM7 is definitely better than the ones for PowerAmp and the other chintzy apps I've got from the market on the sensation, and my inspire just sounds all-around better, especially with 320kbps mp3s and better headphones
