Socionic "mask": how it helps and troubles us

    Author: SK Kamenev, Prokofiev, TN
Submitted by: "Socionics, mentologiya and Personality Psychology", 2009, № 6, p.10.
Our society is arranged so that, getting in certain life situations people put themselves on the "mask" with the deliberate purpose not always introduce themselves to others in a more favorable light. In this article we are talking about what are "masks". In what situations do they interfere with people who bring inconvenience and discomfort, and help in any interaction with the environment and achieving these goals.
Key words: socionics, TIM, "mask" intertype relationships, life challenges and problems, the functions in the cell model A.
The hypothesis of the presence of a number of people "masks" was put forward long ago and confirmed by studies of many socionists. In the works of different researchers 'mask' got different names and slightly different shades of meaning, such as "communicative model" (Yermak VD), "socionic accentuation" (SI Churyumov), "the accents of type" (VV Meged, AA Ovcharov). For the first time the existence of such a person mentioned properties K.-G. Jung. In the introduction to "The psychological types" [1] he wrote: "When abnormal conditions, that is where it is an extremely strong and at the same abnormal plants from their mothers, children may be imposed with respect to the homogeneous setting of violence to their individual disposition, which maybe elected to another type, if not prevented this abnormal external conditions. "
If you look at it from a practical point of view, we can see that the "mask" can both help and hinder our communication and interaction with people.
    The negative impact of "mask"
Consider the scenario when the mask prevent us. This, above all, their unconscious and long wear.Solving a problem in life, people behave in certain, perhaps even frequently recurring situations as a representative of another type, and is not aware of this. Sometimes it happens that the "mask" worn so long that it grows like a true type of person.
This phenomenon leads to the following consequences.
Firstly, on arrival at a new job when they appear in unfamiliar company or on a first date, a person develops an opinion, determined by its mask. This is due to the fact that the first impression is just the mask. But after a while begins to break through this type. As a result, people work hard at the office to which he was taken, management expectations are not met, which leads to frustration and sometimes more unpleasant consequences.
Secondly, the man of moods on personal development and uses this knowledge to Socionics, but wearing a "mask", it is often difficult to deal with its type. It starts the confusion between real and Tim "mask" that leads to the fact that people tend to consider themselves at all by any third type.
In the present example (ILE) to "mask" (LSI). This man long doubted and wavered between TIM (ILI) and (LII) as well as on tests he had obtained a high probability (LII), and from the descriptions fit better (ILI), but the end did not suit neither one nor the other TIM . And only through activities socionics people deal with its Tim, being able to separate it from the "mask".
As a result, the presence of "masks" leads to the fact that human TIM as a dim and not bright.
IN Kalinauskas intertype linked with personal problems [2]. Repeated observations from the practice of counseling, TN Prokofiev and EA Udalova confirmed these patterns. In addition, TN Prokofiev, and E. Udalova [3] tied up with personal problems and also the presence of people "masks." If a person has a "mask" that is, one person would get along as two types, one might say, then, that between Tim and the mask are set intertype relations, which also signal the presence of similar unresolved personal problems.
Below is the list of matching "mask" problems.

    "Mask"Problem
Identity (no mask): The absence of "masks" says the simplicity and reliability of the person. The man is honest enough with yourself and others, not trying to play someone's role, remains adequate to itself
    Dual
"Mask": is the problem of leisure: a man needs a rest, comfort, relaxation, encouragement and support
    Activator
"Mask": is associated with rejection of the idea that the problem is and what it should be solved. There is no motivation to solve problems
    Mirror
"Mask": is associated with problems of implementation of the individual, the implementation of creative, proactive delivery of results
    Business
"Mask": is the problem of work: the feeling that pressure of work prevents live a full life. Difficulties in organizing work, allocating priorities. Or "mask" is the problem of a long job search
    Illusion
"Mask": is the problem of inner freedom: stiffness, inability to make an independent move, the tension escape from reality into a world of illusions. A person has accumulated internal stress, with whom he can not cope. As a result - creating a tense atmosphere for others, care in the world of illusions: computer communication, which replaces the real life, or computer games, the feeling of being lost, inconsistent with the reality
    Superego
"Mask": is associated with survival. Man does not live freely, and "survival" is doing what is "necessary", without comparing it with his forces and capabilities. There is no balance of work and rest, recuperation necessary
    Contrary
"Mask": is related to everyday problems. The man is not enough organized way of life, to how to restore power
    Quasi
"Mask": is the problem of struggle: the struggle of a man passionate about (with someone - people, circumstances), makes this fight more important than they should, or simply struggle is relevant at this time. In any case, the presence of "mask" makes life, interferes with focus, to choose their own, not someone else's money to solve problems
    Conflict
"Mask": tells about the problem of choice. Man is not inclined to make a clear choice for a long time staying in a state of vibration and thus making it difficult life for themselves and others. This mask also speaks of the inner conflict of man
Kindred"Mask" is the problem of self-affirmation. At one time, man has not learned to assert himself worthy of the means, not mastered the techniques approved its position among men, it is now forced to act against its own type, breaking himself to "cover up" their weaknesses, has to be presented to others and even themselves (and, I imagine - in the first place) like a different person
    Semi-dual
"Mask": is associated with learning problems
    Controller/Supervisor
"Mask": is the problem of debt (a person feels superior to others, as if he "must all"). Feels entitled to impose stricter requirements for people without the need first and foremost with themselves
    Controlled
/Supervisee"Mask": is associated with an inability to ask from their debtors to repay a greater tendency than others to ask. The man thinks that "it all should", "conscience - the best inspector." The paper can be problems associated with the inability to ask subordinates for the execution of
    Beneficiary
"Mask": is the problem of avoiding liability for the decisions. People tend to make their own decisions, but shift the responsibility for their performance on other
    Benefactor
"Mask": is the problem of avoiding responsibility for making decisions. People tend to be obedient executor, but do not make decisions yourself, to shift responsibility for them on the otherHow to use this function in practice?

The practice of observation and consultation has shown that man's relation to its issue or problem to solve can be seen and understood by him as to the appropriate intertype relationships.
For example, dual relationships are associated with the problem of leisure. Most people love to relax. And most are very good to his Douala. And if a person is afraid of their duals? The phenomenon is not very common in Socionics, but it is sometimes found.
Here is an example of a girl (ILI), which says its duals, (SEE), a tough, demanding, that she was afraid of them. At any mention of the (SEE), she flaps her hands: "No, no!". And as her affairs with rest? The girl is working "avidly", said that neither late nor early in the morning can not be distracted from thinking about work. As a result, having been at last in a long vacation, decided to go with the creative work on the job "from bell to bell." "In order not to think" - she said. Will she did?
In such cases, the recommendation to learn more regularly helps to relax. And not just on vacation.Requires full relaxation at the end of the week and 1-2 hours each day. And, as practice shows, the relationship with dualom in this case adjusted.
    Formula:
= Attitude toward the problem to intertype relationships
holds both for comfort and for the neutral and stressful intertype relations.
For example, the relationship conflict. Are they suitable for a family? For most people, such marriages are unacceptable. But then a man says that he lived 50 years happily married to conflictor and would not like another fate. Relations correspond to the solution of the conflict problem of choice. And indeed, we hear from this man, he likes to make choices in different situations. His many years of work he connected with the theory of probability and mathematical statistics. And even for the soul has chosen a hobby that is associated with a permanent option, a play on exchange rates.
Worked out the formula is valid for both intertype relationships between people, and for the relationship between Tim and his human "mask."
Let us consider the case when the "mask" prevents us from. For example, a "mask" controlled by, associated with problems of debt-holders makes it softer and more vulnerable. One gets the impression that these people are hardly aware of their personal interests and are willing to sacrifice them to please society.
Here is a verbatim quote that said (LII) in a "mask" (IEA): "Everybody wants to please and to all be good. The company feels an urgent need in whatever was to maintain an ideal relationship. It is very difficult if people are bad for you. "

The influence of "mask" the work functions of the model A
Anyway all the "mask" and including "The Mask" under control, bring down the order and content of the functions in the cell model A. This "mask" requires the owner to work on the weak role function, like passing it off as creative. That is one "climbs" in his superego. As you know, the superego, we are only what is "necessary" that we "should" the community to maintain its social face. And it is no real creativity will come of it.
Another disadvantage of a strong "mask" is controlled by the confusion associated with the interaction of the background function and the bounding function of TIM "mask". This leads to difficulties in both diagnosis and the difficulties in finding help and self-help. Let us consider the example of what it is confusion.
It is noticed that the above (ILE) in "Mask" (LSI), very often from difficult situations out for yourself by limiting yourself and others by the logic of action. When you start talking with him on this point, it is clear that he questions the logic of action appear to be complex, as though he put up the frame. The result is that a restrictive feature "masks" as it restricts the background features of this TIM. And it is a well-functioning background function is an indicator of the reliability of the individual [7,8].
Bounding the same type of function (ILE) - intuition of time, his "mask" (LSI) has been working as an activation. This leads to the fact that a person is very difficult to find inner freedom: instead, to limit unnecessary activity on the environment intuition of time, he feels the need to intensify deystvoviya on it. Intuition of time is perceived as a referential function, forcing to follow the standards adopted in the reference group, people are very afraid of being late, do something wrong time.
"Mask" under control also prevents the holder to establish true confidence to loved ones. This is due to confusion in the suggestive function. People with this problem very seriously and relax. They think that they can not give yourself the time it should devote to others. "I can not deal with them and with his looks, because I have too many obligations to her mother in law. And even if you have some free time, because I do not work, and sit with a child, I have to spend time with him "- that is such a problem has been raised already mentioned our girl (LII) at the fact that it fails to follow the his appearance, and she really wanted to. In this passage heard words such as "should" and "liabilities."It was so one-sided sense of duty is expressed in people with "mask" controlled.
How to "mask" can help us
Now consider the second version of "masks", namely those cases where they are helping us. This is a short putting on a "mask" of a TIM, which may be as unconscious and conscious, especially when a person takes the shape of a socionic type.
You can use it in conjunction with the supervisor or subordinate to endear a man in negotiations with business partners, in acting, in diplomacy and politics. And also in my personal life ... For example, knowing the type of future in-laws, and knowing that it (EII), a girl with Tim (SLE) (intertype relationships - conflict) during short meetings can wear a "mask" (FEL) (co-player-in-law for .) It is only necessary to note that it's easier to put on static "mask" Static types and dynamic - dynamic.Depending on what Timy open at a given (SLE), it order to reduce tensions, could still wear, for example, "mask" (IEE), a type of mirror for the in-laws.
Consider the resulting pattern of interaction in models for A (SLE), (LSE) and EII).
    SLE:
    LSE:
    EII:

THC (EII) - sensory-willed, and suggestive feature - the business logic. Both these functions are one-dimensional. V (SLE) and (LSE), these four-function.
But the fact is that those functions which have (SLE) are conscious, at (FEL) in the subconscious.(FEL) provides support for them without words, in fact the unconscious of the block. A (SLE) overloads these functions in-law a huge number of this informatsii.Iz (SLE), in order to play co-player(EII), to give him information from his Ida, that is, with the background and the bounding functions. The truth is not very easy because for these functions are not very comfortable to talk a lot. But building relationships with future in-law, and not worth very much to say, better contrast, more than listen and listen - then the chances like.
Another essential factor - the reduction of information from this basic function, as it accounts for pain(EII). If a man puts on a "mask" (FEL) or (IEA), the information about strong-willed sensorics not meant to be heard in such extent that feeds it (SLE). Information should be brief and clear, no ambiguity.

Thus, we examined the options when the "mask" hinder us and when help. Using this knowledge, we can control our quality of life, making it the comfort, prosperity and welfare and avoiding those situations where the "mask" binds us and prevents us from developing. We can also manage their socialization, establishing favorable contacts with people of any socionic types, briefly putting himself on the right "mask", if necessary.

I must say I have not seen this phenomenon in action. People's types are rather obvious, even when the environment is strongly socially conditioned.

Getting in a relationship with anybody will make you adopt a dual "mask" on their behalf unless they are your dual.

The problem is that this intuitive "overarching" approach is not detailed enough. What's needed are all 256 possible relations between types, described.

Identity (no mask): The absence of "masks" says the simplicity and reliability of the person. The man is honest enough with yourself and others, not trying to play someone's role, remains adequate to itself.
If I deny these other parts, these supposed masks, as dishonest as the article suggests, am I being dishonest to myself? Jung would say 'yes'. We are not the ego, but everything that goes with it.

Even to get along with a theoretical identical, wouldn't one's ego need to readjust to the other person in some way? Then if we go by the suggestion of the article, all communication and interaction with other people is by default dishonest...even the ego must be dishonest...

That's interesting that the author felt the need to project such an idea unto everything but the ego, as if it gets no association - maybe just portraying his own dismayed expectations of other people not getting met. Because wouldn't it just be easier when people don't act as expected, to simply blame them as being false - as being the dishonest? Wouldn't it be easier to understand?

    *But what do you expect?*

Bullshit, people's types are not always obvious. Stop trying to sound all high and mighty. This shit is not simple for anyone and all you do by making it sound that way is either discourage people or encourage them to bullshit.

Some people's types are obvious, I will give you that. But making it seem like it's a fucking flag people wear on their foreheads is bullshit.

I'm not trying to sound all high and mighty, durr, it's not like I'm thinking all the time about the effect that my words might have on a potential listener. I THINK types are usually obvious, I may be wrong, but that's it.

That's kind of a big part of effective communication, might want to work on that.

I know, but effective communication isn't always my aim, sometimes I'm just casually saying stuff because I feel like it.

I relate to this one a lot and I've never read this article before.

This was pretty much my first posts on socionics.
    http://www.socionics.com/forums/show...p?t=510&page=5

Also I relate to LSI as my mask, I think this is due to my mom being EIE and the way I have to deal with her.

Ganin typed me ILE pretty quickly due to his experience with typing.

I think typing as a skill requires interacting with a lot of different people after making correct identifications.

EIE,IEI,SLI,EII,ESE,ILI,SLE are all types I've had a ton of interaction including many different versions and can type pretty easily. However, there are people I've simply never interacted with, or at least not enough to ascertain a type, and can't type without investing a lot of observation.

I would say LSE, IEE, LSI, SEE I am moderately good at typing.

The other types ESI, SEI, LII, LIE I am poor at typing, I'm pretty fail at finding these individuals in the world. Sadly, one of them is my dual although I did have a very nice SEI/XEI wait on me this weekend.

Something like this is probably true for all people who type. It's always good to test typings in interaction even when you are fairly confident in their type.

Oh, what makes that a bad typing, your typing is been talked about as either EIE or ILE. SLE is a look-alike to ILE.

It's a Fe valuing extrovert which seems to be correct.

You're don't seem to be ESE.

That leaves 3 types, EIE, ILE, SLE.

Your behavior is closer to Beta then Alpha.

Which leaves 2 types, EIE, SLE.

Typing isn't exactly perfect, people can have opinions that may not reflect yours.

People were typing me SLE, they have reasons to believe that which are perfectly legitimate.

If you can entertain ILE, as you have mentioned recently, why not SLE?

I suppose it's not altogether as foolish as I made it out to be. I just don't think many would type me SLE if they met me.

Yeah, there are "masks". Some more natural than others..For example, for me I wouldn't say im putting on a mask or displaying a facade. I see it as a limiter, which is basically another word for self-control. In most cases i'll come off as extremely calm, restrained, and polite, which is true at that point. This is necessary however, because I have such a strong character and if I even let a fraction of it show, its usually too much for that given situation. From what I gather, the more the environment calls for my first function, the more im in my element (trueself).

Actually, wait, it's related to the IEE Supervisee mask I unconsciously adopt in unfamiliar social situations. I fluctuate between that and the SLE Supervisor mask I tend to adopt in more secure social situations.

After you put up the clean translations, someone start a "what's my mask" thread. I think that would be interesting.

Nm, i'll make one myself once the clean article is ready.

Socionic "Masks": How They Hinder Us and Help Us
    Authors: Kamenev S. K., Prokofiev, T. N.
Published: "Socionics, Mentology and Personality Psychology, 2009, № 6, p.10.
    http://www.sociobyuro.ru/articles/30...kie-maski.html

Our society is set up so that, in certain situations in life, people put on a "mask" with the not always conscious goal of presenting themselves to others in a more favorable light. In this article we talk about what a "mask" is. In what situations do they hinder people, causing inconvenience and discomfort, and in which situations do they help people to interact with the environment and achieve their goals?

Keywords: Socionics, TIM, "mask", intertype relationships, life challenges and problems, functions in the cells of Model A.

A hypothesis from a number of people regarding the existence of "masks" was proposed long ago and confirmed by the studies of many socionists. In the works of different researchers, the "mask" acquired different names and slightly different shades of meaning, such as the "communicative model" (Vladimir Ermak), "socionic accentuation" (Semyon Churyumov), and the "accents of type" (Valentina Meged, Anatoly Ovcharov). The first mention of the existence of such a feature in people was by Karl Jung. In the introduction to "Psychological Types" [1] he wrote: "Under abnormal conditions, that is, where there is extremely strong and abnormal influence from their mothers, children can have violence done to their individual predispositions (relative to normal influence), which perhaps would choose another type, if not prevented by these abnormal external conditions."

If we look at it from a practical point of view, we can see that the "mask" can both help and hinder our communication and interaction with people.

The Negative Influence of a "Mask"

Let us consider the scenario where masks hinders us. This is due, above all, to the unconscious and prolonged wearing of them. To resolve certain problems in life, the person behaves in some particular, perhaps even frequently recurring situations as a representative of another type, and is not aware of this. Sometimes it happens that the "mask" is worn for so long that it becomes almost as if it is the true type of the person.

This phenomenon leads to the following consequences.

Firstly, on arrival at a new job and when they go out with unfamiliar people or on a first date, people form an opinion of them based on their mask. This is due to the fact that first impressions arise precisely because of masks. But then some time passes, and the real type begins to break through. As a result the person's hard work in the role he was assigned does not meet management's expectations, which leads to frustration and sometimes more unpleasant consequences.

Secondly, a person who is focused on personal development may study socionics, but wearing a certain "mask" it is very often difficult to figure out his type. It starts with confusion between the real type and the "mask", which leads to people generally tending to consider themselves to be some third type.

For example, consider an ILE in an LSI "mask". This person was unsure for a long time and fluctuated between the types ILI and LII, because in tests he received with a high probability the type LII, but the descriptions of ILI fit better, yet in the end he could not settle on either type. And only as a result of training in socionics did the person figure out his type, having managed to separate it from his "mask".

As a result, the presence of "masks" leads to the fact that the type of a person is sort of blurred and unclear.

Igor Kalinauskas connected intertype relationships with personal problems [2]. Through multiple observations from the practice of counseling, Tatiana Prokofiev and Elena Udalova confirmed these patterns. In addition, Prokofiev and Udalova [3] connected personal problems with the presence of "masks" in people. If a person has a "mask", i.e., if in some way there coexists two types in one person, one can then say that between the type and the mask there is an intertype relationship, which also signals the presence of similar unresolved personal problems.

Below is a list of "masks" and their associated problems.

How do these these relationships apply in practice?

The practice of observation and consultation has shown that a person's attitude toward his problem or task to resolve can be seen and understood by his attitude toward the relevant intertype relationship.

For example, the Dual relationship is related to the problem of rest. Most people love to relax. And most are very kind to their Duals. But if a person is afraid of his duals? The phenomenon is not very common in Socionics, yet it sometimes occurs.

We give an example of an ILI girl, who says that her duals, SEE, are very tough and demanding, and that she is afraid of them. At any mention of the SEE, she waves her hands: "No, not that!". And how is she with rest? The girl is a "workaholic", she says that neither late in the evening nor early in the morning can she be escape from thoughts about work. Consequently, after having finally taken a long vacation, she decided to switch to artistic work on the job all day, "from nine to five." "So that I don't have to think," she said. Will that help her?

In cases like this, a more helpful recommendation is to learn how to relax regularly. And not just on vacation. It requires full relaxation at the end of the week and 1-2 hours each day. And, as practice shows, the relationship with the dual in this case was adjusted.

    The formula:

Attitude toward the problem = attitude toward intertype relationships

holds true for both comfortable, as well as for neutral and strained intertype relations.

For example, the conflict relationship. Is it suitable for starting a family? For most people, such a marriage would be unacceptable. But here is a man who says that he has lived 50 years happily married to his conflictor, and would not wish any other fate. Relations of conflict to the solution to problems of choice. And indeed, we hear from this man that he likes to make choices in diverse situations. He chose a career in the field of probability theory and mathematical statistics. And even for entertainment he has chosen a hobby that is associated with constant choice, playing the exchange rates.

This formula is valid for both intertype relationships between people, and for the relationship between a person's TIM and his "mask."

Let us consider the case when the "mask" hinders us. For example, a supervisee "mask" is associated with problems of debt, making the holders of the debt softer and more vulnerable. One gets the impression that these people are hardly aware of their personal interests and are willing to sacrifice them to please society.

Here is a verbatim quote from an LII in an IEE "mask": "Everybody wants me to please them and above all be nice. The company feels it is urgently necessary to maintain ideal relationships, come hell or high water. This is very difficult, if people relate poorly to you."

Influence of a "mask" on the operation of the functions of Model A

One way or another, all "masks", including the supervisee "mask", divert the order of the filling and operation of the functions in the cells of Model A. This "mask" requires the owner to work on the weak Role function, as though passing it off as the Creative. That is, the man "climbs" into his Superego. As you know, in the Superego, we find only that which is "necessary", what we "should" do in society, to preserve our social face. And certainly no real creativity will come of it.

Another strong disadvantage of the supervisee "mask" is the confusion associated with the interaction between the Background function of the TIM and the Restrictive function of the "mask". This leads to both difficulties in diagnosis and difficulties in finding means of help and self-help. Let us consider an example of what exactly the confusion is.

It is noted that the aforementioned ILE in an LSI "mask", very often gets out of situations which are difficult for him, by restricting himself and others on business logic. When you start talking to him on this point, it's clear that matters related to business logic appear difficult for him, as though he shows limits. The result is that the Restrictive function of the "mask" sort of restricts the Background function of this TIM. And after all, a well-functioning Background function is an indicator of the reliability of an individual [7,8].

The Restrictive as a function of the ILE type, the intuition of time, his "mask" LSI has been operating as the Activation function. This causes it to become very difficult for a person to find inner freedom: instead of limiting unnecessary activity in the environment related to the intuition of time, he feels the need to intensify action on it. Intuition of time is perceived as a referential function, compelling one to follow the standards adopted in the reference group; a person is very afraid of being late, or doing something at the wrong time.

The supervisee "Mask" also impedes its holder from establishing true confidence in loved ones. This is due to confusion in the operation of the suggestive function. For people with this problem it is very difficult to unwind and relax. They think that they can not give themselves time, which should be devoted to others. "I can not attend to myself and my looks, because I have too many obligations to my mother in law. And even if there is some free time, because I'm not working, I sit with the baby, I should spend that time with him" - this issue was raised by our previously mentioned girl (LII), regarding the fact that she did not get to take care of her appearance, and she very much wanted to. In this quote were words such as "should" and "obligations." Precisely this sort of one-sided sense of duty is expressed by people with a supervisee "mask".

    How "masks" can help us

We now consider the second variety of "masks", namely those cases in which they help us. This is a brief donning of a "mask" of a TIM, which can be both unconscious and conscious, when a person specifically assumes the appearance of some socionic type.

It can be used in interaction with a supervisor or subordinates in order to win the person over, in negotiations with business partners, in acting, in diplomacy and politics. And also in one's personal life... For example, knowing that the type of a future in-law is EII, an SLE girl (intertype relation: Conflict) during short meetings can wear an LSE "mask" (Dual to the mother-in-law ). It is necessary only to note that statics find it easier to wear "masks" of static types, and dynamics - dynamic. Depending on what TIMs are open in a given (SLE), she, in order to reduce tensions, could still wear, for example, an IEE "mask", a mirror type for the mother-in-law.

Let us consider the scheme of interaction between the models for SLE, LSE and EII.

The EII's PoLR is volitional sensing, and the Suggestive function is business logic. Both these functions are one-dimensional. In SLE and LSE, these are four-dimensional functions.

But the fact is that those functions which in SLE are conscious, in LSE are subconscious. LSE provides support to those functions without words, from the unconscious block. But SLE overloads these functions in the mother-in-law with a huge amount of information. Because of this, SLE, in order to play the Dual of EII, must give her information from her Id, i.e., with the Background and Restrictive functions. It's true, this is not very easy because it's not very comfortable to talk much through these functions. But in building relationships with one's future mother-in-law, one should not talk too much, on the contrary it's better to listen and listen more - and increase the chances of being liked.

Another essential factor is a decrease of information from the Base function, since it falls painfully on the EII. If a person puts on an LSE or IEE "mask", volitional sensorics information should not be heard to the extent that an SLE would talk about it. Information should be brief and clear, no ambiguity.

Thus, we have explored the possibilities of when a "mask" hinders us and when it helps us. Using this knowledge, we can control our quality of life, bringing to it comfort, prosperity and well-being, and avoiding those situations where a "mask" constrains us and prevents us from developing. We can also manage our socialization, establishing favorable contacts with people of any socionic types, briefly putting on the right "mask", if necessary.

    There we go.

I also have a bunch of thoughts of my own on how masks form in childhood, how they're related to the Jungian Persona, etc. I'm getting closer to being able to write it all up in an article somewhere. There's a few details to nail down yet.

Based on the short description (the only part I read), I think I may have a supervisee mask.

It seems incredibly open to the Forer affect to me. Not a horrible concept but what's here feels half-assed.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

I think the key to typing is still to analyze the base+creative function. This does have some usefulness in explaining a previous mistyping and why a mistyping occurred.

Using this as a typing mechanism is probably not going to be useful.

This is something that can help to explain why someone was in a close relationship with the wrong person for a long time or uncharacteristic modes of behavior based on sociotype.

Not everything is going to be useful in typing, like many of the reinin dichotomies. But they can nevertheless be useful in explaining outlier traits.

I think if the descriptions were accurate, it could be a typing tool. The problem is that the descriptions are suspect, because they conflict with IM element descriptions. For example, Si is often associated by Augusta etc. with relaxation and comfort. So an SEI or other Si-oriented mask might be associated with those things whether or not one is Alpha NT. Similarly, it says that the "conflictor" mask is associated with indecision; it seems however odd that if one's conflictor is a rational type, acting like such a person would make one more indecisive.

My guess is that the authors wrote these descriptions based on what the specific types that are in these positions represent for them. These probably work if one's LII, as ESE may be understood in terms of providing comfort, and a bad version of "acting out" SEE may be seen as going in a bunch of different directions at once.

Having thought about it quite a bit, my impression is that the Dual mask primarily deals with psychological "rest", i.e., the relief of stress, anxiety, tension, etc. An IEI acting out an SLE mask could hardly be said to be physically restful, but presumably that sort of behaviour would relieve a lot of stress and put him in a more "relaxed" state, psychologically.

I haven't quite figured out what they're trying to describe with the Conflictor mask, though, so I'm no help there. A few sentences of description isn't really enough to get a full mental picture of the phenomenon they're trying to describe; I've been treating it like a clue for further investigation.

I agree that the descriptions are very poor and not nearly enough to extrapolate from. That being said, the way I understood it, the problem associated with "dual" mask is a need of rest, or inability to let go of what absorbs the mind. The mask isn't a "remedy" of any kind (i.e. we neither put on Si mask when we need rest, nor IEI isn't "psychologically resting" with a SLE mask on), but a *symptom* of overactivity. This works not only for introverts, but also for extraverts. An overactive SLE might become more and more melancholic and maybe nihilist; an overactive ESE categorizing and abstract. Think of it as advanced disintegration, with exact direction depending on the problem.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to describe. My understanding is that a mask is a behavioural adaptation to deal with a problem; consciously or unconsciously, we modify our behaviour in order to handle life's stresses and difficulties. So an IEI who is consistently under a lot of internal stress may "blow off steam" by adopting a more aggressive SLE persona, and an SLE who consistently endures a lot of stress may seek emotional and spiritual harmony by adopting a quieter and more introspective IEI persona. An EII who's been consistently taught that indulging in flights of fancy and the contemplation of alternate possibilities is stupid and useless, may consciously or unconsciously try to find an alternate way of gaining praise by adopting a more image-conscious and grounded-in-concrete-reality style of behaviour like her Kindred ESI. And so on.

Essentially, a mask is a "work-around" for problems that our core sociotype can't effectively handle on its own.

At first I didnt understand this whole mask theory, but as the new translation has been posted I think I understand.

As far as the conflictor mask goes for example, conflict is the relation which has the least compatility, so this might manifest itself in an inanbilty between partners to make decisions. So the conflict mask means an ILE for example will feel compelled to behave as an ESI which would completely paralyze and inhibit their thinking and acting.

My understanding is that the role function is the person's outward face, being the function that designates the person's public "role", and is what principally allows him to adapt to non-quadra-valued environments.

So, given the preponderance of Te in a particular environment, an ExE (with Te role) would have the urge to cater to an image of someone who isn't lazy and inefficient.

An IxE would not like to be seen as bad at Se, and, in an environment where Se is strongly valued, would make an effort to resist intrusions on his ideas and personal belongings lest he be viewed as weak.

Krig, is that view wrong, or is their a logical way to reconcile it with the "social mask" theory, or another possibility..?
It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarrelled; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now.

Here's my understanding of the Role function:

While the Vulnerable function can only learn how to process information based on what it's directly experienced itself, the Role function has the added ability of learning by being taught. When provided with a "script" from a third party, the Role function can learn how to follow the script and process information in that manner, adopting a "role" like an actor would. But since it can't spontaneously innovate like the 3d and 4d functions, as soon as the Role function encounters an unfamiliar situation that forces it to go "off script", it becomes hopelessly lost and unable to process information effectively. In such situations, the Role function tends to make a lot of mistakes, resulting in painful negative feedback (which is why we tend to avoid using our Super-Ego functions when possible).

So the term "Role function" comes not from any positive desire to be seen as effective in that area, but rather from its capacity to "read a script" and "play a role" that it otherwise would not be able to perform. It's all about information processing, rather than behaviour.

Social masks, on the other hand, are all about behaviour. When our "natural" sociotype behaviour is not effective in avoiding pain or achieving our desires, we can modify and adapt our behaviour to our surroundings in order to achieve better results. Sometimes these can be temporary, situational masks, but there are also more permanent, habitual personas that arise as a result of our childhood and the environment in which we grew up, etc.
