so I'm starting to watch the film now. That's all I've got so far.

"Seven Pillars of Wisdom" is a good read. It'll learn you about Bedouin life and British colonial muckery in pre-nationalized Saudi Arabia as well as introduce you to the phrase "raddled meats".
The impression of gayness will only get stronger as you watch the movie. What's his face, Peter O'Toole who plays Lawrence is gross, and gives a lot of his characters a homoerotic air, but I guess some people thought TE Lawrence actually was gay due to what he wrote about his experience of being raped and all.
