    Default The Elements and You

    Not the real elements, the Greek ones. What is your type and do you identify best with water, earth, air, or fire? I'm looking for a correlation with socionics.

    Same here!

    As an LSE, I identify with earth, then water. I've never been comfortable with air.

    I would say that I've always identified with water the most. The flexibility of shape to adapt to the container holding it, the flow around obstacles in its path, the undercurrents despite a seemingly calm surface, etc. It has always felt as if it described me, as well as my ideal.

    Over time, due to feeling spread so thinly, I began learning a little about shoring up a bit as well as how to direct the flow.

    I like the groundedness of earth people, and am usually attracted them. But I think I tend to prefer those who are more..uh..muddy than dry. Dry earth will resist water, or even the water will pass right through. But with mud there's enough clayiness to allow more water to be added, or for various forms to be built, with the option of reshaping as needed.

    There are times, however, when I feel as if my sense of flow and adaptability has dissipated into a random chaotic mess (airy). This is usually done towards the peaking part of a manic phase (firey). At these times it helps if I find some sense of grounding, something to cling to, to recenter on thru that chaotic mess. At which time the condensation process occurs as things calm down, as my mind calms down, as I pull myself back together, and I regain the ability to flow again.

    Nice response, ann. I've personally always felt a connection to mud. On the way to college today I realized that, though I like water, I don't really have any grounds to associate myself with it.

    Some cool things about mud is that
    a) it's not going to crumble when hit by a torrent, nor will it try to force the water to fit a pre-determined shape;
    b) it's got some give, some cushioning, allowing some groundedness to coincide with some flexibility of form;
    c) a mud person and a water person can work great together, without either over-needing the other. Win-win

    I used to identify with Water due to the idea of mutability and formlessness.

    It works just as well for Earth's all-encompassing nature.

    I associate Ne with air

    I tend to associate
    Ni and Ti with air (mental plane)
    Se and Fe with fire (motivating forces)
    Si and Te with earth (material systems)
    Ne and Fi with water (internal flow/direction)

    An example, I see Si+Te as being the right kind of clay, guidance, and support for the Ne+Fi flow/direction.

    Another example, looking at alpha quadra: The water (Ne) combines with the earth (Si) and creates a clay which is molded and then fired in the oven (Fe) to remove unneeded water (Fi) and sets the shape. With the extra water (Fi) removed, air pockets have been created to allow air/condensation flow (Ti+Ne) to do its thing.

    While delta quadra would be trying to encourage the flow and flexibility to remain as a major component.

    But, if anything else, it would probably be closer to
    air = abstract N,T
    fire = involved S,F
    earth = explicit S,T
    water = implicit N,F

    though maybe the fire and water one there could be reversed...though i have a hard time seeing Se as being water+earth, it seems more fire+earth to me.

    and I'm sure some people will suggest that water/air/fire = dynamic and earth = static.

    anything that associates water with "calm, unemotional" is limiting water to stagnant ponds rather than things like springs, gurgling creeks, raging rivers, waves crashing on the shores, whirlpools, etc.

    (note: and yes, I'm aware that there's a good chance I contradicted myself a few times, )

    Water unemotional? The elements all carry varying aspects. Poseidon was god of the seas and storms and all that; water's emotionality. There's also the aspect of "still waters run deep".

    I think IS is very Earth. They're the patient and enduring types with the capacity for violent upheaval (4D Si w/ 3D Se or vice-versa).

    Also I think water as a symbol tends to carry a sense of dissolution. Like in The Moon tarot, water is where ancient things come from, it's like this unconscious origin for "stuff". Also reflected in the Court cards in the Cups suite. The variation there obviously is that a cup is a container you carry with you, hence why the Cups Court cards are all peering into it.

    Sorry my thoughts are so incoherent, this is tricky stuff to verbalise because of all the symbolism.

    On Tarot symbolism, Earth and Water are both introverted, where Blades and Wands are both extraverted

    I think:

    Earth/Pentacles = IS
    Water/Cups = IN
    Fire/Wands = ES
    Air/Blades = EN

    It's really loose though :/

    Ask the chinese. I think the element wood can be seen as respresenting for plants. But Metal is not molten earth. Molten and cooled down Earth has more of a glass-like consistency (aka Obsidian). Metal is made of ore and not earth since earth ultimately consists of dead plants. So earth has actually much more in common with the element wood than metal.

    Kind of, but there's more to it too.

    Wood is associated with trees and woody plants, who are constantly fiercely competing and endlessly growing upwards.

    Metal is more than ores as well, it's gemstones. Metal is an element shaped by pressure.

    Here are my results from that Chinese elements personality test thing where you select traits by clicking the little boxes next to them.

    Fire 16 % Water 27 % Wood 6 % Earth 27 % Metal 22 %

    Interesting.

    According to that 5 element test:
    Fire 46% (due to my playfulness, curiosity, and spontaneity)
    Water 21% (due to something along the lines of not-so-still waters run deep)
    Earth 14% (due to loyalty and diplomacy attempts)

    Wood 10% (due to moodiness)
    Metal 7% (due to inhibitions)

    I still don't like the serenity and calmness that the words associated with water, but the introverted words definitely didn't fit me either.

    I'm not sure I would have interpreted the metal and wood words as positive things, even if I had more of them.

    I didn't care for half of the fire description, it seemed too much like a blaze run amok.

    And I definitely liked the earth words, and while I'd want them in a partner/friend, I wouldn't want to have those traits in myself.

    I'm sure they are positive traits for many people...
    but they wouldn't be in me.

    For Wood: intense, driven, assertive, dramatic, competitive, argumentative, irritable (me, heheh), demanding, difficult, impatient (me), dominant, loud, fast, aggressive, ....not traits I would want in myself (honestly, it all sounds so exhausting and...angry

    For Metal: orderly, discriminating, systematic, precise, analytical, aloof, formal, proper, elegant, humble, inhibited (me), polished, careful, bossy ...
    uh, not for me..and a person high in the metal traits would hate hate hate being around me...I'd actually feel sorry for them having to put up with me.
