I dunno, you should get to know him and find out what's wrong.
Do you have any more information on his situation? What is his job? There are many factors that could be at play. For instance, does he have depression?
Speaking for myself, challenge and autonomy are probably the most important factor in my job satisfaction. I'm happiest when I'm given a challenging independent project (or better yet, when I can choose my own project), and can experience the benefits of my hard work (like, seeing how it's helped our area of study or our work unit). It's also important for me to have a clear connection in my head as to how I'm helping the world, even if it's in a very small way. I need to focus on the big picture, rather than how any one particular task may not be fun.
it might be useful to describe work some...

Posts I wrote in the past contain less nuance.
If you're in this forum to learn something, be careful. Lots of misplaced toxicity.

I enjoy self reflecting, writing on forums, cleaning, reflecting on how I can help people. making tea, healthy cooking, making food for other people, applying bandaids, helping wounded animals find their way, routine-repetitive things to keep a system in the same way day after day.
I don't enjoy walking around and soliciting admiration (which I think is Se related). I don't enjoy organizing things, don't like purchasing cooking stuff, furnature. I enjoy taking care of the small details, love the decorating parts, like adding accents and lamps and pretty flowers or vases, candle, etc.

I'm constantly looking to align the real with the ideal.I've been more oriented toward being overly idealistic by expecting the real to match the ideal. My thinking side is dominent. The result is that sometimes I can be overly impersonal or self-centered in my approach, not being understanding of others in the process and simply thinking "you should do this" or "everyone should follor this rule"..."regardless of how they feel or where they're coming from"which just isn't a good attitude to have. It is a way, though, to give oneself an artificial sense of self-justification. LSE

That implies that I enjoy work tasks. Really, though, I like low-stress work that requires low concentration and doesn't have to be finished within a short timeframe. I also prefer to work with people - less boring, more fun that way

Yeah.. I think libraries would be perfect for me (outside of rockstar, superhero, fbi agent, and indiana jones). If I had some task, it'd be to redeem the rep of librarians from uptight and horn-rimmed glasses to nonchalant and turquoise ray bans. I suppose I'd still keep some of the uptightness inherent the job.. getting medieval on someone for surfing porn, not paying late fees, and such.
