Default Poll: Do you take life seriously?

(you can move this thread if you want. I do feel it's type related which is why I put it in "general". more on that later)

More or less. This shouldn't be interpreted to mean that you're serious all the time or anything. Or that you don't laugh or can't take a joke. Just that you, more often than not, have a serious outlook. Don't think too long about it though--go with your gut reaction.

I would say no, which is why I doubted that I could be a "serious" type as far as the Reinen dichotomies go. Which is yet another example of why I don't like them. Misleading.

I take details seriously, but not life itself. The world can fall down a black hole, but the forks will be in the fork tray.

I have a motto. "There are two types of problems: those you can do something about and those you can't. There's no need to worry about the problems you can solve, and there's no point in worrying about the problems you can't solve."

I agree though. Who cares about the forks? I take details less seriously than anything else in the world. And I don't take much that seriously.

Huh? What? Illusion? I assure you, I can tell whether I'm in control. I do relax as far as not worrying because that's more sensible. I do not relax as far as doing things because that's just lazy.

You won't like having children. Once they can reach the silverware drawer, keeping the forks lined up and in the right place is all over. I'm glad if they're in the drawer and not down the stairs so I don't have to re-wash them. Actually, I'm happy if she doesn't throw the silverware in the garbage.

Not for myself, but the silverware's in the top drawer, and if my irrational younger brothers stayed out of it, I'm sure Brilliand and I did.

Well all kids are different. The older one wasn't interested in messing with the silverware but the younger one sure is.

Yep. It all depends on the kids... Like, my first kid never put anything into his mouth besides his binky, or food and drink. My second, though, is much more the typical kid when it comes to "exploring" with his mouth. Let's see, my oldest rarely climbed up on anything; now I have pictures of my second boy standing on the piano keys, up on the kitchen counter, and even perched precariously on the slide-out keyboard tray of the computer desk

Not sure why people are criticizing Abbie's values/approach. It sounds totally in line with LSE and E1, and it's a perfectly functional way to exist in this world, even if you don't live that way yourself.

The motto she describes is very much like the serenity prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." That saying is so well known because many people find it helpful.

Re kids: Regardless of your type, your strengths, weaknesses, and values, having children will challenge you.

My response to this question was that I take life seriously. (And I care about some of the details, but not all of them.)
LSI: “I still can’t figure out Pinterest.”

Me: “It’s just, like, idea boards.”

    LSI: “I don’t have ideas.”

Not criticizing. Actually, I rather like her way of thinking. I am much the same way at times. But I've definitely had to force myself to become less so since having my boys. It hasn't been easy.

Sometimes I catch myself not taking life seriously enough, and I start to mobilize into action and get serious about life.

Sometimes I catch myself taking life too seriously, and I start to relax and not take things seriously.

    It's equilibrium for me.

Hm... to answer this question accurately, I would a definition of "life." I take some things more seriously than others, but, as a whole, I think I take life pretty seriously. I would have answered "yes" along those lines, but I cannot, as I do not know my quadra. I relate most to Gamma or Delta, but I can't be sure currently.

Great thread, though. I like it.

    50% serious and 50% funny.

W/o seriousness you have no core or substance. W/o humor you have no lightedness.

The universe has a natural magnetic balance. The humor is constantly trying to raise everything UP and the seriousness is trying to bring everything DOWN. It's really like gravity. But you need both for balance. Without seriousness there can be no 'humor' and without humor there can be no 'seriousness.'

People who tell too many jokes have a defense mechanism about something to me. People who are too serious need to cut that crap out or they will just end up hurting only themselves.

This reminds me of art. 'Style' is funny, and humor. But to relate to your audience you need substance and a core. Pain is the only thing that's really real, so the pain of seriousness ties everything back to the center, and makes everybody love your art. 'Good art should make you vomit, and feel hella empathy for the victims being abused.'

Instinctively speaking, people hold onto their pain (because it turns into love and strength) and because it's real and hold on-able, and people let go of their happiness- because it's light and not hold on-able. You can't just hug something that naturally wants to float up away into oblivion.

The personal style or flair is there to make everything seem interesting, as well as your own unique aesthetic value. Tie everything together, and you have art.

If you avoid all pain and tragedy, you're just being naive to the horrors of the world and putting your head in the sand like an ostrich. But talking about it too much makes everybody kill themselves.

No, I don't. In fact, this tends to be where some of my problems stem from. Other people tend to take it entirely too seriously and well...I find it hard to care sometimes... about much of anything because I can see the big picture and in the end, nothing really matters. Your job doesnt matter, it just pays the bills. All that really matters is if you enjoy your life which is why i tend to get depressed often because i'm always a slave to doing things I hate and doing things that other people want, not what I want. I'm working on changing that but you'd be surprised how hard it is to fall off the grid. That's a dream of mine.

I take life far too seriously when I think about my future and the idea that I have to make something of myself. I don't want it to be that serious at all, but I tend to feel obligated to think that way.

I've heard it said--not sure I agree--that people who take things seriously or are melancholy or whatever are more likely to have a lot of humor. It's something I watch for and sometimes seems true. It makes me think of the Pierrot archetype and Charlie Chaplin.

And I guess everyone except the enlightened has some set of defenses. Jokes are hardly my least favorite, heh.

An admirable attitude I wish I had the discipline to emulate more often.

I don't know how to not take life seriously. I've always been a sort of perfectionist type and always had a lot of expectations for myself and my future. It makes it difficult to relax sometimes.

Depends on who you're asking. Some people may see a lack of determination as not being serious, or someone who is not grounded in reality is not serious, I don't know, certain people have a weird view of reality in my eyes. I would definitely say yes, I do take life seriously. That doesn't mean I have all these expectations and rules for myself and others. I'm an easygoing and rather strange, but ultimately and down deep serious person.

Haha, yeah, especially the Ti-ESTps. They have always seem serious to me, even in my opinion. :/

Agree with glam and Galen. In terms of taking life seriously, I am more cautious in terms of decision making as I believe that one action leads to another. Therefore, I tend to visualise what will eventually happen if I take such-and-such route. However, the downside is I tend to procrastinate in terms of coming to a final decision, especially when the decision been made cannot be altered in future.
