Default Big Five and Socionics: Test yourself and discuss!

Here are two Big Five personality tests. If you are interested in it please do one of the tests and post your results. If you are interested in its relation with socionics please read my post below and discuss!

    More reliable version (300 questions):
    http://www.personalitytest.net/ipip/ipipneo300.htm

    Shortened version (120 questions):
    http://www.personalitytest.net/ipip/ipipneo120.htm

    Very unreliable version (48 questions):
    http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/

I'm checking out the Big Five theory of personality which is a personality theory currently most supported by psychologists. I'm not sure if there is any underlying theory or if it is based only on statistical factory analysis. Five factors or "axels" were discovered that seem to best define personality. There are no types but people are supposed to be distributed along each factor according to Gaussian (normal) distribution.

Factors have different names but this is one version:
    Factor 1: "Neurotism"/"Emotional sensitivity"
    Factor 2: "Agreeableness" / "Compassion"
    Factor 3: "Conscientiousness"
    Factor 4: "Openness"
    Factor 5: "Extroversion"

There have been different studies of correlations between MBTI "axels" E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P with Big Five. Result has been two axels correlate well and two partly. One axel is missing completely from MBTI.

Now I have been thinking this approach to compare the systems is flawed and researchers should try to find correlation between functional axels formed by

    Axel 1: Ti - Fe
    Axel 2: Te - Fi
    Axel 3: Se - Ni
    Axel 4: Si - Ne

As these are often considered to be opposite functions thus forming possibly well polarizing factors/axels.

Now what I was thinking is if the Big Five factors would correlate to functional axels in the following way:

    Factor 1:
    "Neurotism"/"Emotional sensitivity"
Low = prefers Ti over Fe; High = prefers Fe over Ti

    Factor 2:
    "Agreeableness" / "Compassion"
Low = prefers Te over Fi; High = prefers Fi over Te

    Factor 3:
    "Conscientiousness"
Low = prefers Se over Ni; High = prefers Ni over Se

    Factor 4:
    "Openness"
Low = prefers Si over Ne; High = prefers Ne over Si

    Factor 5:
    "Extroversion"
According to research correlates heavily with MBTI introversion/extroversion. Probably not too much with socionics interversion/extroversion. Might be linked to socionics type and subtype somehow for example in following way:
Extrovert type with extrovert subtype: scores high on extroversion
Extrovert type with introvert subtype: scores average on extroversion
Introvert type with extrovert subtype: scores average on extroversion
Introvert type with introvert subtype: scores low on extroversion

Also I was thinking wheter types actually exist or are they just illusionary stereotypes and real people can reside anywhere between two (or more types). This is probably somehow connected to the crosstype "theory". The fact that people seem to be distributed evenly on each axel seems to suggest that types are not real. If types were real people should basically score high on two factors and about middle on two others. In introversion/extraversion axel should be distributed in a gaussian way as it is so no problem there.

Anyways I can still see that types could be real but perhaps cultural forces and interaction with other people "forces"/makes people move closer to the middle-ground giving the illusion that factorial preferences are not heavily polarized but instead concentrated in the middle of the axels. This would mean true types come forward perhaps only when you are put under fierce competition which will make you use only your strenghts and polarize your behavior to better match your type. In "peaceful" situation most people behave as sort of "crosstypes". I think this phenomenon has been discussed in some thread already (?).

So what is your take on this? Do you see the Big Five axels correlate with functional axels as I suggested? Do you see them correlating in some other way? Perhaps they correlate but not as straightforwadly as I suggested (not one-on-one correlation)? Do you see Big Five more representative than MBTI or socionics meaning it grasps something these two others don't? Or do you see socionics and Big Five strongly model the same thing and Jung's theory could be used as underlying theory to explain the statistical findings of Big Five researchers? Do you think types are REAL types or "illusionary" stereotypes?

This might be total crap and not anything I fiercely believe in so don't punish me Just discuss Big Five and its relation to socionics interests me. This is my first take on the issue and I haven't read much about Big Five yet so correct the facts if I got them wrong.

And test yourself and compare the result to your type using the factory to function correlation I proposed and see if anything sensible comes out! Yes this is Internet based research and not very reliable but I hope it is fun and educating

    Here's how to establish correspondence:

MBTI I/E: high correlation with Big Five Extraversion. Highest: gregariousness, friendliness and cheerfulness.

MBTI S/N: good correlation with Big Five Openness to New Experiences. The strongest is with intellect, then imagination and artistic interests. The others correlate less well.

MBTI T/F: pretty modest correlation with Big Five Agreeableness. This is the one that is more difficult to translate directly. There is also a relationship between F and Neuroticism.

MBTI P/J: modest correlation with Big Five Conscientiousness.

There has been some talk about a SIXTH dimension of personality - personal integrity/honesty. This is because the big five "morality" (also called "straightforwardness") is somewhat detached from agreeableness and would seem to indicate the existence of this other factor. This could also explain disagreeable but sincere people, or agreeable people that manipulate others. The "morality" scale refers to the extent at which the person manipulates others vs. is honest and direct.

Knowing this, probable translations to MBTI imo:

    FDG: ENTJ
    Bionicgoat: INFP
    RMCNEW: ISFP
    Aleesha: INxP
    MySaviour: ISxP
    Gronau: INTP

Nice At this point it is pretty clear that the factors don't correlate well with the "function axels" I proposed. Either they are modeling more or less different aspects of personality or they are constructed/rotated in a very different way...For example ENTjs and INTps get surprisingly different results.

This is average of two ENTjs and two INTps:

    ENTj
    Ext: 86,5
    Agr: 52,5
    Cons: 75
    Neur: 24
    Open: 57,5

    INTp
    Ext: 0,5
    Agr: 32
    Cons: 38
    Neur: 60
    Open: 30,5

INTps are more neurotic and less everything else. Only thing I can see from this is well...ENTjs are more extroverted, do more stuff and participate more to society where INTps are more closed and neurotic. Almost as if the introversion/extroversion greatly affects all other factors. And these two types seem to have nothing in common even if they are mirrors and belong to same Quadra. Uh...can't figure this out yet...

I guess I have to go deeper into subcategories and model A and whatnot to see the where the similarities and differences really are...but I don't like the way they are matched to MBTI E/I, S/N, F/T, J/P because that hides the difference between Te/Ti, Se/Si, Ne/Ni, Fe/Fi and involves the MBTI concept of J/P which is different from socionics.

I haven't done my own yet. I'm trying to create a sort of model to predict my outcome first...some of the questions are just so weird like "do you often go to art museums". That seems like it is pretty related to your culture and social circles and social status etc. I can understand it correlates on the average but individual differences are pretty big there.
And it seems to promote extrovert types because they just probably do more stuff in their lives and get higher scores just because of that...
    Well who knows.

Anyways do you feel your result represents your personality well?

ENTjs seem to have a lot in common. About 4/6 subfactors in each category seem to have values somewhere close to each other. This is a good thing. There is hope that people with same type are somehow clustered and not spread wherever.

However the things common with INTps and ENTjs so far are...
    Cooperation
    Sympathy
    Emotionality
out of 30 possible. There were couple others slightly related.

This huge amount of data , hehe, suggests a bias for extroverts in the big five model..they get higher scores. E.g. I guess ENTjs and INTps can't be compared without somehow scaling the data. So far it seems big five doesn't capture much relevant about there commonalities within quadra. This might change if values were scaled but it seems like there is no simple way to match the big five results and socionics They are about different things...all that is left is to see is whether identical types really are clustered and close to each other...also it would be cool to see if look-a-likes and comparatives come close to each other.

Pity no IEIs have done this so I can compare results! (Except Bionicgoat but aren't you still doubting your type or something?)

I added 48 question version from another site for those who don't want to take the longer ones...I'm not sure how reliable that one is but it is better than nothing

Here is a link to the shorter test:

I added it to my first post too.

me, from another site. this isn't the same test, but it's my Big 5 / Global 5 / SLOAN Type Description from a while back, SCUAI

life of the party, not bothered by disorder, not afraid of doing the wrong thing, often late, level emotions, not afraid to draw attention to self, worry free, people loving, prefers unpredictable to organized, fearless, not apprehensive about new encounters, likes philosophical discussions, disorganized, not easily annoyed, not a perfectionist, enjoys danger, comfortable in unfamiliar situations, anxiety free, always joking, not very private, very curious, not embarrassed easily, adventurous, flexible, narcissistic, trusting, easy to get to know, easy to satisfy, likes crowds, ready to act on the spot, not a bad loser, outgoing, thrill seeker, not easily discouraged, optimistic, laid back, open to new experience, slow to judge others, thinks fun is the most important think in life, socially skilled, easily talked into doing silly things, rarely prepared, willing to take risks, adjusts easily, passionate about causes, willing to explain things twice, spontaneous, relaxed, believes in universal harmony, eager to soothe hurt feelings

I guess this is me... however, not entirely:

    I am usually:
not afraid of doing the wrong thing, often late, people loving, prefers unpredictable to organized, not apprehensive about new encounters, likes philosophical discussions, not easily annoyed, enjoys danger, comfortable in unfamiliar situations, very curious, not embarrassed easily, adventurous, flexible, ready to act on the spot, not a bad loser, thrill seeker, not easily discouraged, optimistic, laid back, open to new experience, slow to judge others, socially skilled, easily talked into doing silly things, willing to take risks, adjusts easily, passionate about causes, willing to explain things twice, spontaneous, relaxed, believes in universal harmony, eager to soothe hurt feelings, fearless

    I am only sometimes:
life of the party, not bothered by disorder, level emotions, not afraid to draw attention to self, worry free, not a perfectionist, anxiety free, always joking, easy to satisfy, outgoing, rarely prepared, disorganized

    I am NOT (or rarely):
easy to get to know, likes crowds, thinks fun is the most important think in life, not very private, narcissistic, trusting
