I think the thing to do in this situation is to just nod your head in placation and back away slowly towards the nearest exit.

There are no exits. I can never find a near exit.

There are usually Exit sign in public buildings. Maybe you are in a private building. In this context, private usually means owned by someone. If you are in one of those buildings, I hope the owning entity does not think that it owns you.
