    Psychology, of course.

I'm really proud of this. It's one of those cases where everything that the character says can be put in the context of the system. Really impressive stuff.

But what I really like, is that the entire dynamic of the conflict between Neo and Smith can be modeled so accurately. But in real life, the lines tend not to be so neatly drawn, eh?

Everything unfolds so quickly in a 2-hour movie

The lines are out there, I'm afraid. There is always a jealous peer undermining you.

Yeah but, that's what I meant: in the movie, the rivalry is essentially innate. In real life, it can be situational. There are more psychologically adaptive people than maladaptive persons, so it's not like everyone has their "match" out there. In fact, history probably pivots around who does and doesn't have an appropriate equal to balance them in their generation. Not to say that work can be canceled out completely, but that some people basically go unopposed and moreover, don't feel the pressure of significant opposition in their lives.

It's reasonable to assume the author used some kind of psychology or philosophy in writing the film
