I routinely deal with other people while working on a problem of some sort in my head, and possibly observing something else at the same time.

Depends on the tasks. I have no problem listening to music and reading or surfing the net at the same time. I tend to have multiple windows open on the computer at once and will go back and forth between them. I'll cook and do other tasks like pay bills, going back and forth between the two.

On the other hand, at work, I hate having to deal with multiple demands from other people at the same time. I hate it when I'm helping a patron at the library and the phone rings. Those kinds of things. Or when I'm interrupted and forced to suddenly change gears. Like when I'm immersed in a project at work and a customer suddenly wants my help, breaking my concentration. Unlike the examples in the top paragraph, here I don't get to switch gears at my own will.

Depends. Physically, I'm very good at multitasking; when I'm working in a fixed environment where my attention has to be on lots of things for a sustained period of time, I'm fine. However when it comes to dealing with a person and working at the same time, I kind of get tripped up; I have to have my full focus on someone to have a conversation, or else I kind of drift off or get too absorbed in what I'm doing. However at the same time I've been known to be able to listen to two conversations separately and keep them both going I guess it's just a matter of dealing with either people OR things.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

I'm very poor at multitasking. Also what is 'Distributive attention?' Putting your attention to multiple things at once? Huh?

I prefer to do work one thing at a time unless the work is related.

studies show that women are better at multi-tasking than men. that's definitely the case around here. although I don't like it, as a mom I'm forced to do it. and I'm pretty good at it. My husband can't really multi-task at all.

same. I'm noticing that I relate to a lot of what you write.
