I'm having trouble understanding what makes a function empowering or limiting. What are the rules for that?

Dynamic + Accepting = Limiting
Static + Accepting = Empowering
Dynamic + Creating = Empowering
Static + Creating = Limiting
A function axis (all Accepting or all Creating functions taken together) concerns a whole and the parts it is composed of. The Limiting function signifies the whole, the Empowering function signifies the parts.
Dynamic functions concern presentations and percepts on one hand (Pi) and measurements on the other (Je). These are the functions of face-value registration of data. The thinker is in direct contact with the data.
Static functions concern actual objects on one hand (Pe) and factual propositions on the other (Ji). These are the functions of behind-the-screens inference. The thinker is only in indirect contact with the data.
Accepting function axes concern things of which the direct experience of the thinker fully encompasses everything there is to what was cognized. There is a chance to ruminate on what goes on outside of the experience, but this bit is a matter of contingency: you can come up with any answer you like as long as it loosely relates to what was observed.
Creating function axes concern thoughts which integrate many observations into one such that the observation is the part and the thing-in-itself that each observation loosely hinted at is the whole. Now it is the observation that is contingent and arbitrary and it is the thing-in-itself that is absolute.
Accepting/Limiting/Dynamic: things acknowledged at face value
Accepting/Empowering/Static: ruminations, attempts, gambles
Creating/Empowering/Dynamic: observations that present a problem; curiosity/wonder (the parts are known, but not the whole)
Creating/Limiting/Static: knowledge/understanding, things that held true through all observed cases
That should help you put things together.

NB: a measurement is a clearly articulated way in which one percept/presentation is different from another. It signifies a relation between two percepts, and a fact that is true of one and false of the other. This kind of "fact" is subject-bound. It specifies truth or falsehood of a thing in the experience of the thinker.
Contrary to what may seem intuitive, Te is a subject-bound function. All Dynamic functions are subject-bound. Te's objectivity consists in how it signifies absolute knowledge. This knowledge is not knowledge of any real world state of affairs but knowledge of truths or falsehoods expressed of registered data (experience). Knowledge of things that one is in direct contact with. There is no process of inference between the known and the "knower" and as such no sequence of steps that could have gone wrong. The knowledge is immediate. Absolute. Right here and stupid for anyone to deny.
The above in socionical terms: Accepting (immediate, simple, reactionary) Dynamic (subject-bound, at face value) Judging (concerned with propositions, truths and falsehoods) is Limiting (absolute, all-encompassing).
Likewise, a factual proposition is a clearly articulated way in which one object/thing (as in: something that exists apart from the person's thoughts; cognized as a rational organization of percepts) is different from another. It signifies a relation between two objects, and a fact that is true of one and false of the other.
Judging functions concern facts (wether subject- or object-bound), whereas Perceiving functions concern the things of which facts are expressed. The former concerns verb-phrases, the latter noun-phrases.
