    Default Change

I was wondering about rationals and irrationals and change. But thought I'd open it up to all types to respond.

What is your self assessment with change in the workplace?

Say, you found out about a position being eliminated that would affect you, or maybe removal of a system that you use regularly. What about just hearing about a big change that doesn't affect you directly?

Changes happen in my workplace on a near monthly basis and it doesn't bother me at all. I pick things up extremely quickly and don't stress about anything. The general attitude is "MEH, WHO CARES". But then again, I guess for my answer to be valid, I should care a little about my job before answering this question...

i dislike it if the company were to decide on a change, and not inform their staff till the very last minute.
if there was gonna be change that would affect me, i'd prefer to know about it before hand (not last minute), and the details.
the details of what is to be changed is important information to me.

given the example above, if the notice of the change was given in advance, and there's information on what is gonna replace the old system, i don't think i'd be bothered that much.

i remember interning at IBM and the person in-charge would just tell me on the day itself that there was to be a change of plans and move me to different projects each time. it irritated me that i had already settled on an idea of doing something, and he then tells me last minute to go somewhere else, and not tell me what i was gonna be doing there. he would tell me nothing of the job scope. and when i asked him, he himself was not even sure.

I much prefer routine and stability.

    Yes, to this.

"His feeling that this world is not his Fatherland, and that it does not represent his proper condition, so to speak—his feeling that, basically, he 'comes from afar'—will remain a fundamental element which will not give rise to mystical escapism and spiritual weakness, but rather will enable him to minimise, to relativise, to refer to higher concepts of measure and limit, all that can seem important and definitive to others, starting with death itself, and will confer on him calm force and breadth of vision." — Julius Evola

I change clothes twice a day. I change my position in the chair when it gets uncomfortable. I change what I eat from day to day. I change moods depending on the weather. I change my mind when necessary. I don't think anything else needs changed.

or maybe removal of a system that you use regularly.
Ouch. I'd by helpless. I'd write an essay. (That's what I do when I'm mad.) I'd tell the boss exactly why he's a total idiot for allowing that system to be removed. I'd explain how my performance will inevitably decline without that system; I'd go from extremely useful to practically useless.

(This sorta happened at a theatre rehearsal. I set my script down, and somebody moved it. I knew all my lines, but I was frantic. I was in the habit of checking my script constantly backstage. We had a rotating set, and I'd written in my script which way to rotate it and when. I had been dictating the set rotations. Now I couldn't even help; I might mess up!)

Say, you found out about a position being eliminated that would affect you,
Depends. If I deemed it a useless position, even if it were mine, I wouldn't mind. Otherwise, I'd write an essay.

What about just hearing about a big change that doesn't affect you directly?
I'd be annoyed and would voice my opinion rather openly, but nothing more.

You'd write an essay? How does that help you?

When I get really annoyed and indignant, I write essays. I want the whole world to know that I'm right and they're incompetent.

I don't mind change, and there aren't too many things that make me feel as though I'm being controlled. And even then, if I see that the situation warrants a little coercion, and it's done in a 'real' way—as opposed to some underhanded bullshit—I won't necessarily balk. But all this revolves around a more general tendency to just go with my own internal rhythms. Change tends to accord with what I desire or expect anyway, and I tend to maintain a certain self-containment, hence the passive reactivity. BUT there have been times when people (ahem delta family) have tried to alter my rhythm, force me into certain activities, or worst of all, criticize how I go about things (like incessantly asking why I sleep at odd hours...just fuck off, ugh). At that point, I will just start fucking things up But I always revert back to the passive state. Internal whims <3

It's not too difficult: I don't impose on anyone, and I don't expect them to impose on me.

Change mess up with the flow of my work, speech, quickness, pace. I have diffculity with change becuase everything is setup unless it's clear on my head that the alternative method is better then i can gradually apadt to it becuase my head saids it make sense, hence why my dual is the LSI.

Unless they're firing me or requesting me to work longer hours at the same pay, I am not bothered by change.

I see change is a good thing. I usually don't mind change at all and most of the time I adapt very easily to it; I even welcome it when I feel things have become too repetitive.

The only time when changes irritates me is when I've got something good going on and something negative comes along to take that away from me or spoil it to a situation less desirable; especially when it's a situation that I have difficulty pulling myself out of.

It depends what kind of change. I have a difficult time remembering procedural paperwork, so if you're a stickler about it, it's best not to change it too much. If the new way makes a lot of sense, I have a better time remembering why we're doing it a new way. But if it seems relatively arbitrary... uh-oh.

As for changing people, locations, schedules, whatever, I'm fine with it. In fact, I am far more satisfied with my job if there's a lot of variety in general. I tend to become slower and more demotivated if I'm stuck in a routine for too long.

That being said, I don't like to be interrupted if I'm thinking about something complex. I think that has to do with the nature of my job, though. Too many outside distractions and I'll end up forgetting something.

I am good at adapting to change. What stresses me is when the change is due to person's lack of coherency or utter disregard of something important. In a circumstance like that I can lose my temper.

Also, I agree with this statement. I would much rather have control over the situation than be controlled by it.
