What is your primary goal when discussing something?

I was wondering if a specific type tends to have general goals that they have while discussing something that sort of transcends merely what they're talking about. Ie perhaps an ENFj might seek to impact people emotionally even while discussing something highly intellectual, or an INTj might seek to understand and perfect the ideas behind a friendly conversation about cars. What do you think your primary goal, if any, during a discussion usually is?

My primary goal in any conversation is to siphon information out of a person.

hm. well i wouldnt say there is a particular tendency, but there might be certain assumptions about the nature of language. I think i've used language for many reasons and no one reason sticks out. I think mostly for information exchange though. I suppose when someone strikes a conversation about cars, I will be compliant but if they start talking about points of view I will explore that, so I guess that could be refining an idea.

Well, depends. If I'm just having a good time hanging out, I discuss to entertain people, somewhat. If I'm having a "serious" discussion, then there are two cases: - either I haven't a definite opinion on the subject, so I would like the discussion to be either an exchange of opinions or somebody telling me something; - or I have a definite opinion on the subject, in which case my aim is more like convincing the other person.

To learn as much about the person and what affects them emotionally as possible, in order to either connect with them or protect myself if things turn sour. More often than not I do it so that I can find out what makes them happy so I can imrpove things for both of us.

Hmm. To have some sort of mutual connection where we both understand what something is like. Being goal-orientated is probably too different than being relationship-orientated. You want to help people with something that doesn't have any clear cut answers.

I want to go somewhere in my personal life, yes. I don't feel like a man, if I don't have some sort of direction... or go through-it-ness. But relationships, are messy and different, and soap opera-ish.

Lately it has been about listening people and maybe pointing out some other ways of seeing things. Suggesting things to try has been another.
