I can't stand them ... and I'm wondering if it's type-related. I was thinking that maybe Si-dominant types might be less inclined to enjoy them being that the intent of them is really to scare you, get you out of your comfort zone. Or something. All I know is that they are torturous for me to sit through. I was slouched down in my seat in the cinemas a couple of years ago with my eyes half covered watching one ... when suddenly it occurred to me that it was ridiculous to endure something that is only entertainment when I find it the opposite of entertaining. lol What a brainwave. I haven't been to one since.

So yeah - any Si-dominants relate? Or am I just a big sook?

I have a love/hate relationship with them. I love watching them and all thier suspensefull goodness but sometimes after I watch them I am paranoid lol. My ESFj friend doesn't really like them and she is insanely paranoid after watching them. We saw strangers together and when she was dropping me off my gate code to get into my neighborhood wasn't working. She told my friend to drive away quickly and that it was some kind of trap and there was some crazy person after us lol.

I find black comedies like Shallow Grave and The Young Poisoner's Handbook enjoyable, just so long as they aren't vulgar, and I can tolerate thrillers/horror if the scaryness is detached. I.e. I don't like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (not because it was scary, because it isn't, really), but I do like The Blair Witch Project.

What I don't like are horror movies that are actually sadistic, like Wolf Creek and Funny Games--both movies that I find very disturbing. Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects are also pretty sick, but the latter is actually quite well made and manages to be both entertaining and sadistic at the same time.

You might think I'm being pretty arbitrary in my preferences, but movies like Hostel and Saw have this overdone sleaziness that, to me, feels entirely fake and comical, whereas films like Wolf Creek and Funny Games are meant to be nothing more than realistically disturbing and hateful. Both of those cross the line, as far as I am concerned.

Another horror movie that I view as a comedy is the original The Shining; Nicholson's dialog and facial expressions are timelessly funny. It's one of my favorite movies.

As far as the truly scary horror goes, it's probably my favorite genre. Zombies movies are my favorite, and in my opinion the scariest one is the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

And the weird thing is that I don't like playing scary video games, as they make me anxious and paranoid, but I love the feeling of being scared by a movie.

I basically agree fully with this post, awesome. I don't play video games either, but I can definitely see how scary ones would make me anxious and paranoid as well. Dunno why.

I also enjoy greatly the overly gory torture porn movies, and I as well find them very comical most of the time. People think I'm weird when I laugh randomly during horror movies. I recall one incident wherein I watched The Grudge (sucked) in theatres and I just laughed at the absurdity of some parts... needless to say, those with me thought I had some issues...

I've never heard of those other apparently disturbing/sick movies you've mentioned besides Wolf's Creek... wasn't that pretty popular ? I'm gonna go check it out on imdb.

Has anyone heard of Salo (100 Days of Sodom) ? Now THAT's an apparently TRULY disturbing, sick, depressing horror movie.

ETA: I've noticed that the LIIs I know really dislike horror movies. They actually have slept/walked away somewhere when a group of us were watching some horror movies. Se PoLR much? I guess the correlation could probably be made between Si valuing vs Se valuing here, former not liking horror movies as much. Oh, another interesting pattern I've noticed IRL is that intuitive types tend to like horror movies much more than even Se Ego types. It's as if they like to get a good sensory shock, or kick and find it more amusing than not, waking themselves up out of their heads.

I laughed my head off when I watched Saw 3 on DVD; my EII mother, on the other hand, was deeply disturbed by it, while my brothers(SEE and LII) seemed bored by it. I've never seen a horror movie that genuinely scared me, but I agree with the posters before me that alot of them are kinda funny.

Its kind of a toss up for me. Most of the time horror movies are so predictable and so over the top that I end up laughing most of the time and predicting what will happen. [It usually does]

Zombie movies make me laugh. I hate gory movies like Saw though and ugh I saw Rob Zombies version of Halloween and that was just disgusting.

For me it is spirit movies like the Grudge (I know that didnt scare a lot of people but I thought that lady was freaky) and the Strangers. I think the Strangers scared me because I have a paranoia about people being outside my house watching me or waiting to break in.

I would have to agree with the playing scary video games. I just can't play them by myself, even in the day.

For some reason I am one of those types that likes depressing moves like Requiem for a Dream. I think it feeds my Ni and maybe my Fi relates too to some extent.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo. I don't think we can be duals anymore. I love most horror movies. Of course, I tend to think of them as comedies more than anything. The only 4 movies that ever really scared me have been some old ass Invasion of the Body Snatchers (this was when I was really young) where they couldn't go to sleep or they were fucked, Event Horizon (I was like 10 or 11...), The Ring (yeah that type of movie messes with me... Plus Naomi Watts has always been my celebrity crush so I had extra empathy =p When I got home that night my TV randomly turned on to static, must've been because of a power surge or something, and I straight fled the room INSTANTLY), and the Mothman Prophecies (the suspense just builds and builds...). My favorite movie of all time though is Cabin Fever. That shit is SOOOO FUNNY, the cop is like the best character of all time. I just recently found out they're making Cabin Fever 2 and I was so happy.

I guess I don't like all of them, though. One of the only two movies I've falling asleep during was The Blair Witch Project (the other being Taxi Driver; maybe I have terrible taste haha). The marketing team for that movie was amazing, but the actual show was just one giant snorefest. Most slasher movies are the same for me, too. It's just like go grab a knife, pointy end away from you, extend arm: movie over. It's hard for me to find a character that's supposed to be one real person with no superior weaponry or any sort of cunning frightening. Hell, I guess I found Saw very boring too, and that at least was a killer in control vs just some crazy dude with a knife. I am straight addicted to every zombie/vampire movie, though. I love anything supernatural like that. Le pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) was fantastic and I even liked The Ruins and its killer plants haha.

El Orfanato fue bueno pero creo que no fue una pelicula de horror. Fue una drama sobrenatural.

Last minute addition: Oh, I guess Signs maybe scared me too. I mean, if you just look at individual scenes it was a masterpiece. The movie was kind of ruined by its ridiculous story, but each scene by itself was so well done. That movie got me so tense I was jumping 3-4 times during it in the theater. The rest of the movies that scared me gave me this different sense of building suspense, but Signs is the only movie that has ever made me like jump in my seat, so I can't hate it too much.

I'm like a horror movie director's dream, I jump and scream and whimper and cut off the person next to me's arm circulation at all the right parts. It's very shameful to be so completely taken in by special effects. It's also very shameful to be made fun of by everyone else when they seem to enjoy the entertainment of me being freaked out more than the actual movie itself. So yeah. I don't watch them if I can help it.

HEY NOW. I have no problem if you just don't enjoy horror movies for how they directly make you feel, but not enjoying them because of all that stuff towards the end is ridiculous. I mean, maybe I'm just a bit retarded and maybe I have a lot of retarded friends, but making fools of ourselves and laughing about it is generally the easiest way for me to really bond with people. I definitely find everything you said very attractive, infinitely moreso than someone trying to be some sort of fake hardass. That is the proper response to horror, you know There's nothing shameful about being taken in by special effects and if your friends are being that big of dicks about it get new ones.
