What was going on here?

This is a true story, 100%.

A guy I used to work with in Belgium was driving on the faster lane of the motorway. A car came very close from behind -- you know, as if wanting him to mske way. Instead of letting them pass, he accelerated. The other car also accelerated. Then he thought the other car wanted to race him, so he kept driving faster and let the other car try to catch up with him. This went on for a while, and he was having fun -- until suddenly the other car revealed that they were the police. Since by then he had been driving waaaaaay over the 120Km/h speed limit, he got a huge fine.


So, what was going on there? Anyone relate? Any suggestion as to the functions involved?

That exact same thing happened to a friend of mine when she was 16. She was going the speed limit, but a policeman tailgated her until she started speeding up. I'm not sure if the car was unmarked or not, because it was late at night. Then once she was far enough over the limit, he ticketed her. I'm pretty sure that is illegal, but of course she didn't know that at the time.

The person in the lead car probably saw the approach as a personal threat.

"Oh, you want to challenge me? You have the audacity to challenge me? Fuck you."

But the temporary rush of adrenaline and the outright defense of insecurity blinded him and taking it on so personally blinded him to the potential.

I'd probably guess that under normal circumstances this person understands these potentials. If anything, I'd say that the driver in front probably saw some (territorial threat) and made a rash decision to not back down from the threat eta: and it characterized the person making the territorial threat, but it caused a blind spot in an otherwise healthy sight of potentials ()

But it sounded like it wasn't "fun" until they were already well into the high speed territory.

I'm talking about the initial contact.

And even if the person's mindset was to race for fun, what is he responding to? It's still a response to a challenge.

Car approaches from behind, the guy would probably think "Hey, all right! This guy wants to have some fun! All right, let's do this!"

Hmm. He's welcoming an "invitation" that was never there. I suppose if he had the foresight of what was about to take place, he knew that he would get the rush of competition.

I guess in that case it's maybe a bit of and ... maybe sort of responding to an request?

What I'm finding interesting is, let's say the car behind wasn't a police car, but someone who rapidly approached the car in the way I suggested above. Maybe someone agitated that they're traveling much slower, so forcing them to make a decision by declaring their presence.

The guy might still have interpreted that as an invitation to race, which is to say that he wouldn't have taken the back car's intent for what it was meant to be. The dude behind is agitated and suddenly sees a response, but not because the dude in front was threatened.

Basically I'm just seeing a case here where a possible intended IM ends up being read as something completely different by another person, but the end result ends up being, I guess something in which in this hypothetical the participants are somewhat "positive" -- the guy behind got the guy to move, the guy in front wants to race.

Male insecurities? Didn't wanna feel like a bitch by giving in. Drivers are stupid, I see that all the time. That would obviously be though, wouldn't it? Even though he was having fun, that just reeks of insecurity to me.

I'm just as bad sometimes. I drive a small white car ('02 mazda protege) and sometimes assholes in those redneck big trucks think they can have their way with me, and it pisses me off. I'm not going to drive a fucking small penis syndrome thing though, thanks.

It's sad how men feel like they have to do stupid things to well, feel like a man. I think that's what it was. I saw these 5 teenage punks today, all gay porn starred-out and they tried to look all bad-ass but you could easily tell they just thought too much about what other people thought of them.
