    Default Type my brother

This is the only picture I have of him right now.

He's the guy closest to the camera.

My brother spends inordinate amounts of time perfecting his image; he takes great pride in his hair, which he systematically straightens every night after a shower. (To the best of my knowledge, he still does it - I'm not living at home right now.) Personally, I think this is a ridiculous ritual which is pointless and time-consuming. Nonetheless, I'm different to him. Most would look at me and say "doesn't care about his image". People look at him and say "good fashion sense, takes care of his appearance etc.". He's got a wide social network; he's never short for people with whom he can chill or do things, like party or watch a film. Academically, he's intelligent, but only if he works hard, a bit like me, except that I'm more intellectual and theoretical than he is; I'll spend my time posting on forums, whereas he'll spend his time with friends. Only when he's entirely run out of options for socialising, or if he's waiting for his friend(s) to arrive does he sit down, slouch around and watch TV. He gets very easily bored by philosophical or theoretical conversation, which my father and I frequently engage in (it's not just him either; it's my sister and mother too, although due to my mother's obvious maturity levels, she will be happy to talk about such things as the philosophy of art).

My brother enjoys parties, but he often prefers active outdoor activities. Often he'll be playing with fire by throwing bottles of flammable shit into a barrel or making mounds of dirt to do cool bike stunts on; essentially partaking in "boys' stuff". Although he's grown out of it a bit now, he'll frequently go through periods of interest in building or making something. He generally prefers to socialise though; I get the feeling he's far more partial to gatherings of close friends than of huge, wild parties. In any case, boredom is his worst enemy, it really is. So when I'm at home, he's very rarely around, and when he is, he's intent on playing on the Xbox, or playing Risk or entertaining his mind with something where he's "doing" something; keeping his entertainment levels up and boredom levels down.

I always tell people when they ask me to describe him all this, plus how I compare with him. I always say "you'd like him a lot more than me. I'm an aggressive, moody bastard, he's a likeable, easygoing, entertaining guy". He's very socially aware, both of people and of etiquette in the social arena (e.g. he had a massive problem with my arguing a point with him at someone else's house). He's more attuned and sensitive to people's feelings and desires than I am; I will shout my point regardless, whereas he will often offer up a different interpretation, which is often highly insightful. For this, I commend him. As I said, academically he's intelligent when he works, but socially, he's a master of his class. Truly.

Ask me some questions on him if needs be. Obviously I may not be able to answer those that are to do with how he thinks, because I can only guess.

    I can say Si-valuing with 100% certainty.

I want to say ISFp, but you said he didn't really enjoy theoretical discussions, which would seem to go against Ti. Even so, given that Ti wouldn't be a prominent function for him, I guess I could still see ISFp.

Are SEIs very active people, though? I assumed they were essentially quite lazy, like Bionicgoat.

I'm not sure of bionic's type. The IP temperament isn't about laziness; an ESTj can be just as lazy as, or more lazy than, an INFp. The IP temperament is about internal flow, or rhythm. I would expect most ISxp's to be pretty active because Si is not only about experiencing life's flow, but it is concerned with the physical aspect. This coincides with how you described him doing certain activities and liking to be outdoors.

    I was thinking maybe ESFj.

Sounds more ESE to me. Surely SEIs can be active, but your description of your brother makes him seem more "fun-loving" and expansive (within his area of comfort) than an SEI would be. Sounds a lot like one of blantantly ESE friends from back home. Though he looks a bit zoned out in that picture, I get the impression he tends to energetic, and his dress seems to be more expressive than focused on creating a sense of comfort. He clearly values , and seems to seek . The social mastery you describe seems more of a nature for sure.

He probably doesn't like theoretical stuff from you because your is filtered through , which likely bores him. (Too much of your demonstrative function will drive you nuts because it all seems obvious and superfluous.)

The way I can tell an SEI from an ESE usually is to listen to the way they talk. When SEIs are excited, they often draw their words out to convey stimulation, whereas ESEs start speaking in short, clipped, emotionally charged sentences. (Well, that's my hypothesis anyway. I need to test it more, but I think it's reasonably sound.)

It seems that Ezra is "lording it over" the others in this picture... and his brother is ignoring him.

    (tone: not serious)

In fact, the brother seems bored. Why?

I don't think he sounds SEI at all. What you say about him being socially aware and focusing on image and entertainment make me think ESFp. His life sounds too exhausting to be an SEI's. And like Riddy said, we're more about comfort as far as image is concerned - I think if he were SEI, any superfluous time-consuming rituals would soon be discarded in favour of speedier alternatives. :-) Also, the concern for social etiquette and being attuned to people's feelings sounds more Fi than Fe IMO.

I don't understand why a man would spend so much time on his appearance, each to their own. I'm all for being clean, maybe even a little gel in the hair, but there's something not right to me when a man takes longer to get ready than his girlfriend.

However, i'll have a look at him later and try and suggest some sort of type for him, if it'll be of any use. I'll do even if it isn't of use aha.

    SEE
    LII
that is what i was getting at. if there is an inescapable appropriation that is required in the act of understanding, this brings into question the validity of socionics in describing what is real, and hence stubborn contradictions that continue to plague me.

He's one of the most unpretentious people ever. He's very out there; a 7w6 on the Enneagram. His interests seem shallow, but he's not an idiot crowd-follower. He has pretty good taste in girls, by the way.

What kind of "shallow" do his interests seem to you? I'd garner you'd interpret SEE shallowness as a lack for reasonable and clearly thought-out approach to interaction and as a threat to your social position, whereas you'd see ESE shallowness as a focus on present enjoyment at the expense of more "important" long-term things, often feeling that he gets a lot more from you than he gives back. (Please note: this is not my description of these types, but a guess at how an SLE might interpret them.)

    SEE for sure.

I immediately got "un-Alpha" vibes from that photo. Many SEE males I know are exactly like your brother in terms of being very conscious of their appearance and a master of social networking. The stuff you describe him doing sounds a lot more focused than .
I do not think SEI is even remotely possible. ESE I can understand maybe, but I don't think he is because there is something about him that seems "rougher" than an ESE would be.

I'm not sure one fairly nondescript and non-contextualized photo is enough to get a strong impression from VI. Alphas can look pretty "rough" when they're bored.

Well, he likes to network and socialise. He likes going to the park, chilling out, bike-riding. He's a pretty conventional, regular guy. There's nothing that makes him explicitly stand out from others, like an interest in something like socionics or gardening (nothing that seems strange or odd for someone his age, basically). He's got a good mind, but it's good in the context of his social group. He fits in at school with a lot of people; I did not.

This is as bad as heath's comment about the ENFj not being a beta type because he's interested in environmental issues.

One ISFp will be the president of a very important student organization next year. They can be active and involved and professional and do things.
Posts I wrote in the past contain less nuance.
