    Default Turkey Talk

soooo who's cooking turkey this year? and what else are you having? or are you going somewhere so you don't have to cook?

i bought myself a free range organic and i plan to brine it overnight. supposed to taste better than your traditional butterball.

menu this year includes: both mashed and sweet potatoes, cranberry jelly and relish, broccoli/blue cheese casserole, green beans almondine, flaking biscuits, sparkling grape juice, banana cream pie, and of course apple pie a la mode.

can't believe what this is costing though

    ILE

I'm driving home to Los Angeles this holiday. I haven't been home for a full year.

And I'm sure after 2 days there, I'll remember why *snort*

Usually I go rock climbing with a bunch of friends for Thanksgiving but I decided not to go this year. So, I'll probably go to my dad's, even though my stepmother isn't too great of a cook. I'm probably going to take tofurky and a couple of homemade pies (blueberry and pumpkin, I'm thinking).

Turkey is better than chicken IMO...but none of my family think so . We only have it at Christmas time, and I'm definitely making sure we get one.

Blaze, you've forgotten brussels sprouts on your list.

Do Americans have Christmas Pudding...or do they just have apple pie ?

Typical/Traditional Thanksgiving dinner usually has things like: turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes/yams, different caseroles, cornbread or just corn cooked in some way. Lots of people add cranberry sause into the mix, along with string beans. Stuffing in the turkey of course. Gravy. At least thats just how my family has always done it.

People usually gain a few pounds this time of year in my family

I think we might have had apple pie once at Christmas time, but only because we were consuming everything in the fridge . I think I've had cranberry sauce before as well, but I don't think I particularly liked it...it's more of an American thing I suppose.

I ordered an organic turkey (we're hosting my parents and grandparents), we'll have mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, squash bisque, fresh fruit salad (mainly for my mother who's on a diet), broccoli with almonds and for dessert pecan pie and sour cream apple pie.

Should be fine but it's the first time I've done a turkey by myself and I'm a little bit stressed b/c we're also dog sitting for a big golden retriever. I just feel like there's going to be a lot going on!

    thanksgiving:

the time when i am forcibly dragged, kicking and screaming, to see some people who call themselves my "family" with whom i have nothing whatsoever in common and who i see once a year, on thanksgiving. it is an inordinately large distance to travel to eat a mediocre meal. the entire day is utterly and completely wasted. it is the epitome of torture.

I don't know, I think if it was the right sort of cake it could actually be pretty good. I have a feeling you just use the brandy to make the cake really moist, not like take a piece of cake and make a brandy shake out of it

My mom said it's good, and it last practically forever... or something like that. You are supposed pour the brandy on top of it and then light it on fire.
Fire....awesome! I want to try that!

Christmas pudding is a steamed pudding, heavy with dried fruit and nuts, and usually made with suet. It is very dark in appearance - effectively black - as a result of the dark sugars and black treacle in most recipes, and the long cooking. The mixture can be moistened with the juice of citrus fruits, brandy and other alcohol (some recipes call for dark beers such as mild, stout or porter). In Peru, some families use Pisco.

It tastes maybe a bit similar to fruit cake, though is more sticky and treacly and heavy and brandy-like - I can't remember having one with nuts though, but custard is a must...definitely beats apple pie.

I just had an early thanks giving dinner. Because most of my relatives are going on vacation and they decided to push it forward WITH TURKEY.

    Anyway, this year's menu.

    Pumpkin soup
    Turkey, with mushroom sauce.
    Baked potatoes
    Broccoli and cauliflowers, with cheese
    Spinach
    Sweet Corn
    Salad
    Sparkling apple juice
    Wine

O.. And we had carrot cake for dessert.

I'm so full now. AND satisfied.

We're having turkey again for christmas!
