Janna J. Levin (born 1967) is an American theoretical cosmologist. She earned a PhD in theoretical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993, and a Bachelor of Science in astronomy and physics with a concentration in philosophy at Barnard College in 1988, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Much of her work deals with looking for evidence to support the proposal that our universe might be finite in size due to its having a nontrivial topology. Other work includes black holes and chaos theory. Since January 2004, she has been a professor of astronomy and physics at Barnard College of Columbia University. She was the feature host of PBS "Hunting Monster Black Holes.

Pay attention to the very fluid, spit fire unrolling of her speech. Very few pauses, and very strong grasp of her material. Very accessible, democratic.

Ben [displaying a massive board game contraption covered in cones]: Presenting "The Cones of Dunshire," a brand-new gaming experience! 8-12 players, two wizards, a Maverick, the arbiter, two warriors, a corporal, and a ledgerman. Now, the ledgerman just keeps score, and he wears this hat.
Leslie: Oh, boy.
Ben: Now, the object is to accumulate cones. Four cones wins, but in order to get a cone, you have to build a civilization. The other amazing thing is the challenge play--Actually, let me tell you more about the trivia cards, 'cause you're gonna need to know about roadblocks first. Nah, never mind. The thing about the challenge play is that it's basically the game in reverse.

Ben: Then you roll three dice to see how many dice you roll with.

Ben rolls the dice.

Ben: Oh, 16. Perfect, lots of choices.

Starting here, it rapidly cuts between shots of Ben at different points in his explanation.

Ben: Okay, each turn goes: Roll, buy, action.
Ben: I mean, obviously, this would be much taller in the real game.
Ben: But the corporal can veto.
Ben [holding up a cone in his hand]: This should be green too, how did this happen?

Ben [indignantly]: The Cones of Dunshire!

He finally notices the vaguely dumbfounded/concerned/exasperated/bemused expression on Leslie's face.

Ben: This is nothing, right?
Leslie: When do you go back to work again?
Ben: Tomorrow. It's fine. I'll just throw this in the garbage.
