    Default No Discipline

How do I make myself do things?

Basically, I'm just lounging at the moment, and I lack the motivation or willpower to do anything but enjoy myself.

Doesn't matter actually, I've just found it. I've just forced myself to do so. Nonetheless, since I've started the topic, let's talk about it.

Who lacks self-discipline here? Anyone need help with it?
Ideas don't determine who's right. Power determines who's right. And I have the power. So I'm right.

Discipline is arrived at by obtaining ones own personal drill sargeant. When that's not an option, then one has to assume the drill sargeant role themselves... and therein lies the problem.

Everybody lacks discipline. Discipline in many instances is unnecessary, it's just our superego speaking.

Technically yes. But everyone goes through periodic phases of loss of energy through inactivity. I just happened to be going through one of those moments just a few minutes ago.

how do i make myself do something?

    1. force myself
    2. think of consequences
    3. trick myself into it
    4. figure out some type of reward for doing something
    5. prioritize stuff and if it's too low don't do it - don't sweat low priority stuff
    6. have goals and objectives

I wait for the spark of motivation... like waiting for the rains... the problem is that I can't always count on it to arrive, so then I have a few back up plans in case it doesn't kick in when I need it to...

I think discipline is about energy, drive, will, and motive.

The question is rather complex, because where does this energy come from? What creates it? It is a force that leads to action in a controlled way... but the force itself (the "make myself do it"), where does that come from? Why does something so simple seem so hard?

You should get more deadlines. They push you to activity. It works like magic.

If it's on the list, it needs to be done.

If it's done, then there's no list.

The funny thing is, some 1s envy me for how much I get done in a single day. But I only do it because I like it, not because "it's what should be done"

I don't have motivation problems unless it has to do with unpleasant obligation or something responsible someone keeps bugging me to take care of.

I have problems doing quiet-time things though. I can't sit still long enough anymore, I get bored. Books are about the only exception, and only if they are holding my interest. If I get to a part that is slow-going, I usually put it down.

WRONG. The 7 is the 1's gateway to happiness. They can learn a lot from the 7.

No discipline here either. I tend to wait for motivation to hit me (which it does sometimes but which is not the greatest plan). Sometimes I give myself bogus deadlines but that never works because I know they're self-imposed. The very best thing for me to do when I'm lacking motivation is to drink a big cup of coffee, put on some loud music and just do it. ("it" being whatever it is I'm lacking the discipline to accomplish)

discipline is very important. i discipline myself by removing things that distract me. i know my goals thoroughly, and don't wish to deviate from them in any action. when i was using the computer too much i turned off the internet, punched the computer screen, and closed that chapter of my life. when i haven't been studying enough i stop biking, or playing musical instruments and begin studying trying to maintain a solid daily regiment. hopefully this pace will get me on track of my classes-- if not ahead. i realize there are limits. i can't study a single subject for an indefinite amount of time. but consistent variation of resting and physical activity helps me greatly. when i am in for a long haul i will sometimes mount my bike on a stationary trainer and go 45 min study, 15 minute train-- in 3 repetitive cycles. I time everything. and in general enjoy a numerical sense of measure(exam scores, etc). in essence, there is no hoop too high for me to jump through for the man.

i don't think discipline is a mental state(i think some people misconstrue issues this way). it is organized, consistent, and effective actions taken to achieve certain goals.

i entertain myself with my studies, biking, and friends. i think isolated means of entertainment like videogames, television, and computers are not worthwhile, and are habit-forming. the dynamics of friendship prevent this stale progression as a person is always changing significantly, and interactions with computers/televisions/videogames are not.

i spend a majority of my time alone; but remain very productive without outside influence. take my advice

discipline is very important. i discipline myself by removing things that distract me. i know my goals thoroughly, and don't wish to deviate from them in any action. when i was using the computer too much i turned off the internet, punched the computer screen, and closed that chapter of my life. when i haven't been studying enough i stop biking, or playing musical instruments and begin studying trying to maintain a solid daily regiment. hopefully this pace will get me on track of my classes-- if not ahead. i realize there are limits. i can't study a single subject for an indefinite amount of time. but consistent variation of resting and physical activity helps me greatly. when i am in for a long haul i will sometimes mount my bike on a stationary trainer and go 45 min study, 15 minute train-- in 3 repetitive cycles. I time everything. and in general enjoy a numerical sense of measure(exam scores, etc). in essence, there is no hoop too high for me to jump through for the man.
Booooom. Why don't you just do what you want and end up with the same results? You remind me of a friend of mine whom I bike, that has all the instrumentations to rate his training, heart rate, attention to food and all that...and I end up training just by how much I feel like, enjoy it more, and get better results because by not timing myself I let my body decide when it's enough :S

Why goals? They take the fun away...

I will heed it. That's very decent.

Are you a Delta by any chance?
Ideas don't determine who's right. Power determines who's right. And I have the power. So I'm right.

i don't use a bunch of instruments on my bike. i only keep track of three things: distance, time, and avg speed. i enjoy myself, don't worry. I do do what i want, but i realize that a few things are priority. like school, i don't go out until i've done my school work, etc. i'm not 'no fun,' but i am dedicated. good lookin out though, partner.

    ezra: i don't think i'm delta.
