A Brief Introduction to the Basics of Socionics

I starting writing this a while back and never finished it. I never intended to post it here, but I can't think of much of a reason not to at this point. Feel free to criticize or offer suggestions... like I said, it's a work in progress. I know I'm going to be changing the definitions of the Information Aspects a little and adding tables where the functional breakdowns of the types are, but I'm not sure what else I'll do.

I know I left out a lot... you sort of have to if you don't want to end up writing a book. I'm open to suggestions though. I originally wrote it with the idea of having people who have never heard of Socionics before read it, so I tried to avoid making it too bloated with things that would just end up confusing them. It's hard to avoid confusion with the terminology though. Originally I just used the term "aspects of reality" instead of trying to explain the difference between Information Aspects and Information Elements, but I ended up changing it.

a brief response: i must say, i prefer the direct and to-the-point format. however, i think you (like many) tend to simplify the explanation of the information elements and how these elements manifest themselves in individual types. it's just not enough to know that Ne = potentialities and possibilities; what does that mean, exactly? it's incredibly important to give at least passing attention to things like how Fi differs from Fe, how Fi differs from Ti, and how Fi and Te go together, which this does not address at all.

I wanted at one point to eventually write a description of the interactions of each of the functions in each dual pair... that would take too much effort though

give us a break with this crap. this is as bad as "external dynamics of fields" etc.

no introductory student to socionics could possibly understand how this stuff relates to how people actually act like they might with things like "Si has to do with one's internal environment. Si types are focused on making sure that they are comfortable." (obviously this is simplified for brevity).

That was the idea, actually... to put explain it in an easy to understand way that gets the idea of those descriptions across.

Here is my attempt at a "brief introduction to the basics of socionics"

Ok, you start fresh, simply observing reality. There is no such thing as socionics and perception, or reality, comes first. Let us now say that you are here to study reality, to understand/explain it. And let's say that the object of your study, what you seek to understand, are people. So you go about doing that by observing people. And as you observe you notice trends and compile understanding. You realize that it is possible to dissect your observations into two parts, that there are two fundamentally separate things you can perceive about people. You can perceive the people and you can perceive their interactions. So now you focus on these things. With people you soon realize that they can exist in two different states, either extending into their surrounding space or as the surrounding space extending into them. These states alternate. You then realize that people in essence function as magnets, one extends and the other is being extended upon. And in the same manner you can visualize those lines that serve to visualize the magnetic fields, you can visualize people. Lines entering and exiting people. I picture it as red at the point of exit and blue at the point of entry, with the parts in between a transition between blue and red. Depending on the closeness to either pole. Either way, the next thing you realize is that these flows are what you earlier identified as interaction. And this way of thinking is the basics of socionics, observing people as magnets with intrinsic properties and trying to determine those properties and observing interaction between people as the resulting magnetic field caused by the intrinsic properties of magnets and trying to determine the intrinsic properties of the interactions.
