    Default type tindersticks video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icC4O5mq_-4

    one of my favorite bands.

what do you think is being conveyed in this video? i'm not talking about the lyrics, which seem pretty straightoforward, but more the visuals. it seems to be something about exaggerated emotions.
whenever the dog and i see each other we both stop where we are. we regard each other with a mixture of sadness and suspicion and then we feign indifference.

    bump *

i never do this, but i'm pretty curious about this one, and i can't imagine more people wouldn't find the video somewhat interesting.

Here are the lyrics in case you can't understand them in the video.

    Dying Slowly

    I’ve got memories
I keep them away from me
    They won’t behave
Won’t be what I want them to be

I’ve seen it all and it’s all done
I’ve been with everyone and no one

    So many squandered moments
    So much wasted time
    So busy chasing dreams
    I left myself behind

I’ve seen it all and it’s all done
I’ve been with everyone and no one

    So this dying slowly
It seemed better than shooting myself
    This dying slowly
It seemed better than shooting myself

    These worms, darling
    They’re nibbling away at me
They go at it when I’m sleeping
Won’t let me get to my feet

I’ve seen it all and it’s all done
I’ve been with everyone and no one

    So this dying slowly
It seemed better than shooting myself
    This dying slowly
It seemed better than shooting –
If I could find the words to explain this feeling
    I would shout them out
If I could find out all this, what’s inside me
    I would shout it out

    So this dying slowly
It seemed better than shooting myself
    This dying slowly
It seemed better than shouting it out

    I make some coffee
Pull on that new pair of pants
I can get so far [?]
    The feeling just falls away

I’ve seen it all and it’s all done
I’ve been with everyone and no one

    I’m just tired, baby
I just need to lay down
    I’m just tired, darling
I just need to lay down
    I’m just tired, baby
I just need to lay down
    I’m just tired, darling
I just need to lay down
    I’m just tired, darling

I love the Tindersticks - their music is very dark in a Beta kind of a way...so I can see Beta NF as working - I don't know about this particular song, though.

The video seems to be about an unhappy man who is drinking to forget his troubles...later on, the barman won't allow him to drink anymore -> 'so this dying slowly' obviously refers to the memories he is trying to forget and his inability to be able to do so + his general feeling from being hungover + not being allowed to drink.

If you think about it, whenever we're not drinking, we're slowly dying of thirst (although at first it's unnoticeable).

I think there might be a slight threshold...i.e. you slowly die because your organs are failing from lack of water - but that doesn't start to happen immediately after you last drink water.

i'm not sure what you mean by "very dark in a Beta kind of way."

i think the video conveys a detached sort of intimacy. the guy has a phallic nose and in the climax of the video, he is both revealing his emotional pain and assuming a very suggestive victim like position.

the characters are puppets. that in itself could be suggesting a loss/lack of emotional control. puppets' expressions must either be exaggerated or nonexistent.

he talks about memories, yet i don't get the idea that he has specific memories he wants to forget. i actually got more the impression the he is regretting having wasted his life doing nothing. the more he thinks about his failure, the more his facial features become exagerrated. cheeks sink in. nose appears more and more phallic. he becomes less and less human in appearance. all these things correspond to his becoming more and more emotionally out of control.

he comes to the conclusion that he is just tired and needs to lie down, but that clearly seems to be what he has been doing all along. so the conclusion is just a continuation of the current monotonous cycle of life / despair. the real message seems to be that he is in an existential dilemma: as a puppet, he is unable to feel and accurately convey feeling, but as a human, he is unable to shield himself from being hurt and misinterpreting others feelings. a no win.

But that process of losing water begins immediately after you stop drinking it, and then after they dry they start to die. So we're actually only alive while we're drinking. I think it was Descartes who said, "I drink, therefore I am." Or something to that effect, I really can't be bothered to remember.
