Default Darren Aronofsky & His Films

    Perhaps he is EIE.

I think his films definitely carry a Fe message. π a.k.a. Pi was about choosing neither spiritualism (Ne) idea or materialism (Se) idea. Don't really know what Requiem For A Dream was about at its core. The Fountain was about love and accepting fate.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

    Default The Fountain

Has anyone else seen this film? Is it a Fi film? Maybe Delta?

My IEE best friend thought it was okay. He's a big film junkie.

I think it's a modern classic. I really like it. Very gentle and mind-blowing at the same time. I got a strange feeling at the end of it when I went to see it at the cinema. Like my soul had been healed or something.

Haha, really? I've been meaning to see it. It definitely looked like my type of film from the trailers and all. It's also by Darren Aranofsky (sp?) who did Requiem for a Dream and Pi, I believe.

The problem with those two is the similarities in editing, cinematography and style. They're the same movie with a different plot. I'm not too keen on that idea. Both are good, but they're too similar.

I never finished watching Pi. Requiem I watched alone, when I was in 5th grade ... needless to say, it scared the shit out of me and I promised myself during that time that I would never, ever touch any type of illegal substance. Lol, didn't keep that promise long. But yeah, Requiem is a little too reliant on the artsy sequences. Sometimes I think his films are trying too hard.

O_O Now I really have to see this movie. Requiem and Pi are two of my favorites.

The concept sounds Gamma to me (tell me if this is off): traveling through time to find a cure of some kind (this is the part I could be projecting: ) without regard for much anything else but his success in preserving his relationship after having begun to pursue this quest.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

It's more about saving his wife at whatever cost, without considering the true point of love. In fact, I think he could be an LSE who denies the Ni explanation of love; that it comes and goes. And she is his dual, EII. I reckon this is a possibility. Tell me what you think people, and you, Gilly, once you've seen it.

This guy pisses me off because. I think he has real potential as a filmmaker, but he destroys everything he produces with his obnoxious New Age sensibilities.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember the love story leaving me rather cold. To me, the fact that the story focused on a romance seemed incidental to the broader thematic points. The film's diamond-bullet-to-the-brain image for me, was the conquistador's body being overtaken by flowers. What I got out of it was a Qoheleth-esque message akin to "Generations come and generations go, but the earth abides forever".

I may be misunderstanding what you mean by New Age, but Aronofsky seems like a far cry (to me) from shallow hipster posturing about co-opted trappings of Eastern religions. I am suspicious that The Fountain is pretty heavily indebted to Jewish Wisdom literature. And I think Black Swan did a pretty good job of exploring the themes inherent in Tchiakovsky's ballet in a new way. I mean, dude has an Anthro degree from Harvard: what might appear at first glance to be boneheaded pluralism may just be Aronofsky willingness to critique myths based on their own internal logic. Definitely Ni valuing, probably beta NF. I'm going to have to check out Pi and Noah. I've really liked Requiem, The Fountain and Black Swan.
